A guy sits in a captains chair and they bring him a tray with stripped matte finish breech bolts in it. If he needs 20 breech bolts for the Express models the installs the parts and a MIM extractor. If he then needs the next 20 for the 870 Police he grabs the extact same matte finish bolt and puts the exact same parts in them except he puts a solid steel extractor. So there is no way the exact same bolt, same finish, all the same parts but one is any smoother in any 870. The Wingmaster is the exact same bolt with a plated finish and the exact same parts as the Express except, like the P it has a solid steel extractor. the Express, Police and Wingmaster breech bolts all retail for $97 on the Remington parts list. Why? Did I mention there is only one 870? Yes, I know I put $93 in my former reply but I was giving the 2009 price. They are now $97.00

I have yet to see a MIM extractor fail or even become dull. You would then ask why I put solid steel ones in every one of my custom builds. Because that is what buyers expect is why. I have had client who stated to me that they wanted the Police model because he refused to have MIM parts in their shotgun. My reply was to tell him that I can build him a P model but it would not have a trigger as the trigger that comes in the Police trigger plate assembly is MIM and Remington only makes MIM triggers. It is just not an issue as they are as reliable as any on the market and will last longer then you will be alive to be out shooting that 870.

That is an excellent data point, and I thank you.

Everyone should have at least one 870. I got mine (new 870 Express) about 2.5 years ago, and have since put about 1,100 rounds through it...duck hunting, turkey hunting, and trap/skeet shooting. I think it's pretty close to being broken in.

I see your point about MIM. Solid steal does sound better regardless of how any other material may proform.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll see what they have next time I'm there. They usually don't have much in the way of "tactical".

I've come full circle on the tacticool shotguns. I have a Mossberg 500 that's tacticool'ed out and it looks cool, but really isn't very practical.

My next shotgun will be a simple 870 with an extended mag tube. KISS

So JD, you're saying it's almost as smooth as an Ithaca model 37??

Well I think I now know everything i wanted to know when I started this thread. Thanks everyone, especially Aippi. I'll probably end up buying a new Express so I don't have to worry about know how it was treated. Something that bugs me every once in a while with my Browning Silver.

The 37 was one of the best pumps ever made, key word is "Was" as the with many good things, they pass. My only issue with it is all those small little parts. If I did not have my 870's there would be multiple 37's in my home. Since my business is Remingtons I will not admit in public that a well broke in 37 is smoother then a well broke in 870, so good try HankO.

JD, only an attempt at a little feather ruffling .

I currently have 3 Wingmasters; the smoothest of the bunch was an old beat up hunting shotgun, when I detail stripped it I found leaves behind the bolt. It looked the part too, but I'll be damned it is tight and smooth. My current production 2005(?) Wingmaster I bought new pales in comparison.

The old ones were the ones to get.

i'm picking up a pristine condition 1965 wingmaster with brushmaster 20" ic smoothbore barrel. i'm more excited about this than my new 870P... to be sure.

Bills have reared they're ugly heads. It might be a month or so before I can get mine. But I will now be sure to make a educated buy. And don't worry, what I get will be fed well.
