Keep the AR..Save some money for a bit, then head to big 5. They sell a wide selection of shotguns for your everyneeds. From tactical mossberg 590's, Rem 870's, hunting shotguns, and lots more..

You can get really nice ones for around $300. One time they had a mossberg 590 that was 279$ and came with 2 barrels + add a 10% or 20% off coupon thats readily availible for bigger savings.

Big5 carries a "wide selection"? I'll admit that they normally have about 6-10 shotguns in stock but, I would not call it a "wide selection". What they carry is the lowest grade of each model that they stock.

Also, the Mossberg combo that you are refering to is a 500 not a 590. I've bought several of them over the years and never paid more than $200 for one.

Carry your bug out bag, (hump it for five miles, ten or even fifteen) along with your weapon (ammo) and food. See how far you can carry it, as you will have to at some point.

There will will be roadblocks, rival gangs...you will want to avoid and not fight if you want to survive. Will you be in a group (gang), family, or solo?

You should know to where you want to go.

For what are you trying to survive? Family? Wife and kids? Girlfriend? Just you?...

This has been hashed out in the survival section and on other sites.

Defending in place may be an option. Going to a destination may be an option. I prefer Disneyland actually...

Choose your ONE primary weapon, if you don't like AR platform and want a shotgun, get it and practice with it LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT. Because it does!

Not meaning to be preachy here, but YOU are the one who ultimately decides all of these factors and hundreds of more factors that only you know and probably should not share online.

By the way, if you're not sure of your training and condition, join the Marines and a lot of these questions will be easier to answer.

          Semper FI!!!

Stop using TV and movies as training films. Save your money and have one of everything, plus ammo for it.

You can't have too many guns or ammo.

The AR-15 as a primary always! and a mossberg with a pistol grip for up close wet work. What i like about the shot gun is the variable loads that can be used. Bird, buck and slug. A shot gun is a must have.

It's a little scary that this needs so badly to be said.

Hollywood movies are a very unreliable source of information about firearms!

The One Shot Stop and Knockdown Power are myths!

There is no reliable, definitive body of data regarding Calibers, Bullet weight, and Stopping Power. It's all incomplete, anecdotal and biased. Sometimes a firearm will put someone down and sometimes it doesn't.

There is no magic off switch you can point at people and stop them every time.

Anytime you fire your gun at someone it's not possible to know what is going to happen to them. Instant death, not even slowing them down, bleeding out in 30 seconds, survival for three days, total miss. It's a crapshoot. Except maybe the bullet to the head from inches away and even then you better shoot at least twice.

Killing people has real consequences. It's not a game.

Choose a weapon and become proficient and comfortable in its use. Lay in a generous supply of ammunition.

Keep shooting until the zombie goes down.

I enjoy spinning zombie scenarios as much as anyone, but please don't forget it's just fantasy.

for me... when SHTF... I have an AR (street fighting), pistol (pure back up), .22 (catching food) and a shotgun (street fighting...closer quarters)... if time permits a high caliber long rifle (to say "I love you at a distance").

                        Get a shotgun.

I keep it simple.. I have 5 calibers and two weapons in each..

                          .223 - SCAR and AR
                          12ga - M1014 and 870
                          .45 - Sig 220 and Glock 36
                          .22 - 10/22 and Mark III
                          9mm - Baretta 92f and Sig P6

                          And LOTS of ammo... lots

I also have a FN FiveSeven that was a gift.. beauty is that the ammo weighs nothing and it holds a ton... but it would be hard to source in a SHTF deal.

Mostly I collect and shoot for fun and hope the really bad things never happen.. prepare for the worst and hope for the best is the way to go.

If modern civilization came to a sudden halt supply/tool redundancy will and can literally be a matter of life and death. A case of 12 gauge shot gun shells might as well be a bucket of rocks if your only shot gun was to be rendered unserviceable.

                            Once again just MHO.
Actually I have a couple weapons that I bought specifically to barter with..

Oh, and people always forget to carry a good supply of spare parts.. a gun can be turned into a club if even a simple spring breaks.

And while the whole "zombie" deal is entertaining the only real SHTF senario I even see as possible is a huge earthquake where civility collapses and I need to defend my home/family/food from the crap that passes as society these days.

I love reading SHTF threads where people explain how they will carry around their AR15 for long range threats, their shotgun for close encounters, their handgun for last resort, oh and maybe a .22 for squirrels, maybe a revolver for backup, along with ammo for all the guns in addition to whatever else they may be carrying...lol
