Absolutely, those numbers were based on lot of shooting done by line soldiers, shots high, not aiming, shooting over a berm, suppression fire and so on.

Plenty of bad ju ju happens when hit with 5.56, and shot placement does count.

So, you're planning on planning for a survival situation based on what you've seen in zombie movies???? I guess that's as good a plan as most I've heard. Seriously, forget all that crap. If you really want to survive in a SHTF situation, learn and practice real survival techniques. Don't rely on having access to any of your gear, BOB or anything that is not in your pocket at this very moment. Are you prepared to start a fire right now? Can you start a fire without matches or a lighter? Do you know the etible plants in your basic area? Or, are you just concerned with either a Red Dawn or zombie invasion SHTF?

Sorry, I haven't heard that slang before. Is it airsoft, gamer or getto? It sure the hell isn't anything a gun enthusiast would say.

haha awsome thread, you gotta have a semiauto rifle with detachable magazine for shtf because you gotta reload fast for many shtf situations (zombies, red dawn, etc). a shotgun is a good weapon if you need massive stopping power at close distances, but takes longer to reload than a semi auto rifle. i got both, plus a handgun. there is a gun for every situation, but i think a semiauto rifle is the best all around. lets just put it this way, what weapon does almost every military in world issue its soldiers? i know there are handguns and shotguns in the military, but the majority use rifles.

A big part of that number are rounds fired in training while deployed, rounds fired when someone thought the local dog was carrying an AK and about to engage him, rounds fired by gunships (at 4000-6000 rnds per minute, even short(er) bursts take a lot of ammo), rounds fired to provide covering fire, etc.

Rifle and shotgun: they are not mutually exclusive. Think of one as a really big and more useful pistol.

unfortunately most people that even think of SHTF scenarios are idiots, and are hoping for a zombie apocalypse so they get a chance to use the cool toy they just bought - when it reality that item is 100% useless.

if SHTF and you're buggin out - how much ammo can you carry for your chosen weapon and how effective can you be with it? in a true PAW event - there will be no places you buy or even procure new ammo... making any sort of firearm completely useless.

in my BOB there are no provisions for any sort of weapons - first off... if there were any military controls you'd likely be shot on sight carrying a weapon, let alone not being allowed behind any sort of barricade.

NO AR or 870 will save you if you're as dumb as half the people in this thread

that being said - any red dawn event will include me bringing ALL my guns to the party
you don't rise to the occasion,
you just fall back on your level of training.

                        Get a shotgun too, it's a good multi-purpose weapon.

With a rifled slug they're easily accurate to 100 yds.

With buckshot you've got 9 ~.32 caliber balls in roughly a 1" spread per yard - so inside of 20 yards, you've got several torso hits even if you're not quite on target.

As for "knockdown power", it is a myth. However, the wound cavity from a 1oz shotgun slug is so severe (especially at closer range) that if you hit them they will stop.

Zombie tissue is apparently quite soft, so low-recoil buck would be my choice if I had to get somewhere. If I could take up and hold a position then I'd use my AR to extend both my distance and accuracy.

i see a 12g as a perfectly viable bugout weapon... why? its probably the only firearms that youll be able to find ammo for once you run out on the move. i seriously doubt youll tote around a pallet jack with "emergency/survival/shft/teotwawki" ammo stash.

a .22lr rifle is probably a better choice for zeds and survival

In a Category IV civilization busting zombie outbreak, you would also do well to buy chainsaws- lots of 'em. Have car mounted chainsaws on the front and sides of an old VW Bus or something like that and you can't go wrong. Just don't stand on a moving platform and expect to chainsaw the zombies because the driver might have to hit the brakes and you could fall over and chainsaw yourself or worse, the hot chick who's guarding your back.

I haven't heard the term "gauge" in 20 years! The local chollos used to refer to any shotgun as a "gage". They were always saying how they "am gonna get mah 'gage if that fool show up" blah blah. I guess now the new term is "shottie"?

Funny you say that, I grew up around a lot of gangs, it has been about 20 years since I've heard it as well. Seems like these days "shottie" has replaced "gage" in the current slang.
