So I picked up this shotgun on my lunch break. I have not had a chance to play with it yet, but during the quick inspection I was impressed. Blued finished instead of being parkerized, and the few plastic parts people complain about seem very rugged to me. Being a big AR and Glock guy, I guess I got used to plastic. My fears about the handguard coming back over the receiver were groundless. It looks like a six shot reciever mounted side saddle will work just fine. I'll find out for sure tonight when I put it together and have a chance to play with the action a little. Can't wait to shoot it. But it looks like it won't be this weekend. I'll be training with Stone Cobra Tactical instead. A nice refresher handgun course to sharpen up the skillset.

Mossberg is a 5-40, so I assume Maverick would be the same. Call Brownell's, they should be able to give you the right one.

          Thank you very much Wyatt.

So last night I got it out of the box and assembled. I was actually impressed with the quality. I've some really cheap guns before, and this was nothing like its detractors said it would be. It's not a $2K shotgun, but it does seem like it should be worth much more than they charge for it. The action was MUCH smoother than the 870s I've owned in the past. The finish is considerably better than that of the 870 express, and there were a few other fit and finish things I liked about it. Of course, I have ZERO shell count. So that will be the true test of whether or not it is a peice of junk or not.

One problem I ran into is that the screws on my rail mount are not long enough to install it around the magazine tube where it would look the best (rather than on the barrel). So I am going to have to make a trip to the hardware store and hopefully find something that will work. Screws always cost less than $1 each. So its still cheaper than getting a different mount. However, the rail while fine for standard scope rings is just a hair too wide for my throw lever Larue mount to work. I was hoping to run a detachable light. Now it looks like my Surefire 6P is going to be permanently attached. I realize I could buy a new light, but that seems like a waste of money since I already own a bunch of Surefire handheld lights - and Surefire is an excellent light.

If I cannot find the proper length screws I'll probably just say screw it and get the LaserLyte picatinny mount. My supplier has them for less than $20, and I think the Larue mount will work with it.

I have owned my 870WM for 25 years and I just bought a new 18.5" mossberg barrel and choate mag extension from a fellow CG member, And wallah less than 5 mins. work and it holds 7 rds and is ready for the zombie take over LOL and it costs me less to buy both from him than to buy the barrel alone from cabela's, The barrel is even blued to match my Remy. Years ago my buddy bought the 500 from big 5 and I was pretty impressed, We were able to shoot skeet from a hand thrower accurately with the 18.5" barrel

plenty of people I know use the Maverick as a home defense gun. It goes bang, it shoots buckshot and slugs like a champ. What's not to like?

I went for a 500 though. But I'm curious, what are the quality problems with Mavericks?

I've had my Maverick 88 since 2002, and never had a problem with it, would and DO rely on it as a HD shotgun. I bought the 28" inch barreled version then bought a 18 inch barrel a little later down the road. I have killed deer, squirrel, a charging pig, and would definately rely on it to drop a scumbag if he chose the wrong house to break into.
