Work in Progress Maverick 88 12GA Shotgun?

    CURRENT STATUS OF THIS SHOTGUN:

The bolts were too short on the front rail adapter, but I plan to run to the hardware store to see if I can find some that will work. The front sling adapter is still in the mail. I plan to order a TacStar sidesaddle as well.

RECENTLY ANSWERED QUESTION: Does anybody know the thread size on the bead? I want to install a tritium beed but I need to know the thread size to know which model to order.

ORIGINAL POST: While looking for a long gun to round off a DROS (I always do my best to DROS 3 at a time when ordering online to spread out those DRPS fees) I came accross a Maverick 88.

While I realize you get what you pay for, I had a need for a home defense type shotgun, but since I am not really a shotgun guy I didn't want to spend more than I had to since I would rather poor that money into an AR.

    My questions are...

    1) Will the TacStar or Choate 6-Shot Saddle work with the new style handguards or am I limited to a 4 shot (or replacing the forend which requires an additional part to accomplish).

    2) Are there any issues with TacStar or Choate 2 Shot Magazine Extensions and the Maverick 99?

    3) What thread size is the bead should I choose to upgrade to a night sight beed and are there any tutorials online on how to do this without jacking up your barrel?

    4) May have more soon...

    Thanks guys.

You have a pic of the hand guard you are talking about?

Zero options for simple mag extention due to the same style of barrel take down knob that the 500 has.

I have a Maverick. I wouldnt trust my life to it, to say the least. Please take this as a word of advice from somebody who has a lot of guns, shotguns in particular. Spend the extra $100 or so and get something thats 110% reliable.
Will trade liquor/wine/beer for parts and accesories and ammo! PM me. Dont drink n shoot. Offer void where prohibited. Must be 21 or older, etc. etc.

Well the picture shown is this...but they warn that their catalog pictures may vary slightly from the actual product. At this price, I'm not too worried. I may just have to wait to order my accessories until I actually have it in my hands. From the picture it looks like the handguard comes back and covers part of the receiver when pumped, but I just can't tell.

Its just a toy. Not a primary self defense weapon. If it were going to be a primary self defense weapon there would be an additional zero on the end of the price tag. I just can't afford that right now. More correctly I would rather spend it on something else (another AR).

This is to round off a DROS, and give me something to play with. If I discover I am not pleased with it down the road, or decide to upgrade I'll sell it. No big deal.

That said another member who drops $2K per purchase absolutely loves his. Perhaps they are hit and miss. I'll find out once I've got it.

My buddy has the tacstar 6 shell sidesaddle on his maverick with no problems. I don't think that they still have that long of a forend though. That could also be an old stock photo. Even at that though it appears it will stop just before the receiver. Mag extensions are a no go. You would have to upgrade to the 590 barrel and tube which would put you at the cost of the 590 anyway. BTW I actually like his maverick better than my mossy due to the trigger frame safety since I have a pistol grip. Cheap plug, but I have a mesa tactical stock up in the marketplace that will fit it. I also have the action tube and forend combo that will definitely work in there as well.

Looks like the smart move is to just sit tight and see what shows up, take some detailed photos, post them and then ask then.

Well, I couldn't help myself. I ordered 2 accessories for my shotgun (which is shipping today according to Budsgunshop.com).

                - GG&G Front Angled Sling Adapter for 2-Pt Slings (tried all kinds of slings and always go back to the 2-Pt)
                - SpecOps Brand Stock Shell Holder/Top Carry Sling Adapter

I still need to come up with a way to mount a rail for a removable SureFire handheld light. Thus far what I've seen has failed to impress either based on price, functionality, or design.

That's exactly what I am looking for - aside from the price. I had actually been drooling over those for a while now, hoping to find that or the Mesa Tactical equivelent for around $20.

My issue is I can get the LaserLyte 3-Rail mount for under $20 with my dealer discount.

So while looks wise I like the CDMGEAR mount much more, it's hard to justify the $50+ price on the model I would want when I can get something that will do the trick for much less, just won't look as sexy to me.

This shotgun is my "red headed step-child" of my gun collection. Well, my old Remington Targetmaster 22lr already has that role - so maybe it's my "brown haired step-child". I want it to be functional and look nice, but unlike my ARs in which I poor endless amounts of money without complaint, I want to keep the overall pricetag as low as possible.

This thing is basically meant to get me through a shotgun course or two, keep me entertained, and that is about it. Where as my ARs are my pride and joy. If I find myself really getting into shotguns (like I was several years ago) I'll definately want to invest in something a little more upscale.

Ok, so I went dirt cheap on the light rail...

                      The GG&G Front Sling Mount...

The SpecOps Rear Shell Carrier/Top Carry sling mount...

Already have a BlueForce 2-Pt Sling.

Only planned upgrade left is a TacStar Side Saddle. Just have to figure out if the 6 shot will fit.

BudsGunShop.com already emailed me a tracking number. Ordered it yesterday, shipped today. Not bad for such a large operation. Especially consdering it is a regulated item shipping to a heavily regulated state.

                        Scheduled Delivery Date: 07/07/2010

Is it the 8th yet? Darn it! Looking forward to some range time on something new. Been a while since I've fired a 12GA. Sold my 870s years ago and my grandfather's Remington 58 Sportsman Semi-Auto 12GA needs a gunsmith. It is not cycling rounds.

On the 10th I am taking an all day handgun course, so I'll have to wait even longer to get some 12GA fun!

I also went with a cheap light rail. $20 for the LaserLyte picatinny piece, and it works pretty good on my Mav 88.

Can't wait for tomorrow. This shotgun and a Stag lower will finally get out of DROS jail. Had planned on an additional lower, but the deal fell apart and I figured I would save my money.

The rail mount and the SpecOps Buttstock Shell Carrier showed up yesterday.

The rail is acceptable. Nothing all that special, but for $10 or so I was not expecting much. It is definately sturdy enough to do the job and well made so it will hold upto abuse. Looks exactly like the picture.

The SpecOps Buttstock Shell Carrier was very impressive. Made from very think nylon, stiched very securely. High end velcro instead of the usual cheap stuff. Inside there are two rows of shell holder loops and an open space to store a full box of shells. All position so you can easily get at them. The top sling loop looks very sturdy.

Still waiting on the front sling adapter.

Have yet to order the receiver mounted side saddle.
