    Single-shots

I'm currently scraping together some funds for my next purchase and I'm looking to get a single-shot 12 gauge of some kind. Currently I have a Mossberg 500 but it has an 18 inch barrel and my local range won't let me shoot it. I can toss a 28'' barrel on it but that would cost more than the gun is worth.

So as an alternative I've been looking at single-shot shotgun. I'm currently fence-sitting weather or not I should post an ad in the WTB section since I only have 50bux saved up for this task. What are some things I should look for/avoid like the plague? Do you guys think it's possible to find a beat up but functional 28'' single shot 12 gauge for 50 bucks? Anyone has one that's been collecting dust?

Also they all seem to have fixed chokes and I'm pretty sure that means I can't run any slugs out of them period. Is that accurate?

The alternative would be a 28'' barrel for a Mossberg 500 but those are expensive as heck. Cheapest I can find one is 150$ used in poor condition.

I'm not sure about the prospect of buying a Mossberg barrel. If it's going to be anywhere over 100$ I may as well spend a little more and get a stand-alone firearm. A local store offered to order me a Rossi where it would come out to 152$ out the door even and that's a new gun. Really I'm just wondering if there's that one guy with a 50+ year old Iver Johnson or Winchester that's been collecting dust for years that I can get for sub-100$. I know these guns are out there.

What kind do they have and how much do you suppose it would cost OTD?
I'm also hesitant to buy anything from there after a bad experience I had with their staff half a year ago.

Good luck! Most single shots are $1500+ new, the cheapest for a beat up one that I've seen is $600, and it was in horrible conditions.(I assume we are talking break-opens.)

I'm talking about the old, ratty cheap ones you see on gunbroker for 20-70 bucks with only one or two reluctant bidders.
Besides which like I said there's the Rossi which would cost me 150$ new OTD, H&R makes one that would cost me 200$, and that other Big 5 one that was mentioned.

Unlike other designs you can go really cheap on a single-shot and have a good weapon regardless. They're very simple guns. Now an over-under is a different story.

OTD... i'm not sure. I have never bought any rifles from big 5. And of course now I wish I had paid closer attention to the brand. Let me poke around online a bit to see if I can find it. I'm sure it wasn't anything really well known, but for 105 bucks.... hard to beat.

I found an old post (9 months old or so) on another forum about a Big 5 selling single shot shotguns that are made by H&R. That rings a bell in my mind... so I dont wanna give out a bunch of "i think i saw" type of info. but.... I think I saw an H&R 20 guage for sale at big 5 for 105 bucks.

For my project, I got a single shot 12ga for about $160 OTD from Big 5 earlier this year... No coupon because at that time they excluded firearms from it.

I'd like to try my hand at trap shooting and Sunnyvale Rod and Gun has a 28'' minimum barrel length. Maybe try a bit of hunting. Or just have an overall fun gun.

Stay with your Mossberg and find a 28" CT barrel. A older gun is fun if you can work on it yourself. If you find a old gun for $50, that'll mean lot of work. At best you'll find a rough shooter, or you might end up with something unsafe. A $150 new gun might not be the best choice to learn trap with and it MIGHT end up only give you frustration at shooting trap.
