    would this shotgun be legal?

I found this pic on google and it is not my shotgun. but this is exactly what I want. so the barrel has to be 16" or longer? and 30" over all length? is that right? would I be ok with this pistol grip? i like these better then a actual pistol grip. thanks guys.

The shotgun in the pic is either a SBS or an AOW.
Depends on if it ever had a shoulder stock attached to it.

    Federally...
It needs a minimum 18" barrel length and a minimum 26" overall length.
Unless, it is BATFE approved as a SBS or an AOW.

    CA...
It needs a minimum 18" barrel length and a minimum 26" overall length.
Unless, it is BATFE approved as an AOW or a SBS.
If it is BATFE approved as a SBS, you will also need to be approved by CA DOJ BOF for a Dangerous Weapons Permit.

AOWs do not require a CA DOJ BOF Dangerous Weapons Permit, so all you need is BATFE approval to own an AOW.

OC Armory in SoCal is a Class III SOT dealer and can assist you with legally obtaining an AOW.

ok, so if I got a shotgun that had a barrel that was 18" and that came with a wood stock, could I cut it off and shape the grip the way I want to? and also made sure it was over 26"? or cant I?

if the above does not work what about this:
I buy a shotgun that comes with a pistol grip and 18" barrel, then get a wood stock and shape it into the kind of pistol grip I want and put it on. making sure its over 26". would that be ok?

the thing is I really like the look and feel of those grips. my friend had one in georgia that i shot and really liked so thats what im going for.

As long as it has a minimum 18" barrel length and a minimum 26" overall length, it will be legal.

This would be the the easier way to do what you want.

How about if the SG is an auto ??? Would the 18"/26" rule be the same ???

I thought I remember something about pistol grip / no shoulder stock on an auto SG being a no-no ... I could be wrong !!!

And when you shoot it, make sure to support the butt of the pistol grip against your hip bone to keep it from flying out of your hands, lol.

lol, well ive shot 12GA shotguns one handed before, the recoil does not bother me. im also 215 and 6' tall so i can handle it. ive just really liked the look of it. and handles very well. id like it to be a semi auto shotgun but i dont think i can do that.

The 18" minimum barrel length and 26" minimum overall length applies to all shotguns in CA.

Overall length is measured with the firearm in the shortest firing position (ie. stock collapsed/folded).

Semi-auto shotguns can not have both a pistol grip and a folding/extending stock or thumbhole stock.
A semi-auto shotgun with a pistol grip and no shoulder stock or with a pistol grip, vertical forward grip and no shoulder stock is CA legal.

Speedfeed makes a polymer pistol grip stock set with the angle as shown in your photo. With the grip angled to the plane of the shotgun, recoil "is kept to a minimum, allowing shot by shot control." Don't get too excited about owning a SBS in CA, just yet. There's some missing information here. The easy part is to pay the $200 SBS tax stamp to the Feds, to get approval to manufacture the the SBS. Getting your local CLEO sign-off for both is near impossible for a civilian in CA. One way for a civilian to by-pass the CLEO sign-off is to form a trust. A trust is legal entity, not an individual, so requires no CLEO sign-off.

The AOW route is a little less difficult:

Life can make you do many things, even kiss a man with a runny nose.
