since you're new to shotguns - do yourself a HUGE favor and get out there and try some out. get a feel for the controls (they are widely difference between say, the rem 870 and the mossberg) see which you like best, check the fit, finish - features and price...
then buy the one you are most comfortable with, the one that speaks to you, and one that you will enjoy shooting (because if you like shooting it, you will shot it - making you that much more prepared to defend your home)

I agree with this as well. Don't go with some off label inexpensive brand to save some money. Do you really want to take a chance on it not working before you pull the trigger. Also, there was a posting that said to try them first before buying, which is a good idea. Most importantly, whatever you purchase, take lots of formal training classes. Yes, it will cost more than the cost of the weapon and it is some of the best money you can spend. Look for local classes if you can find them.

As for my personal likes, I prefer the Mossbergs because of the tang location of the safety. The Mossberg 500 at Big 5 is a great deal at $270 with two barrels (hunting and home defense).

rem 870 and moss 500 are 2 guns you cant go wrong with. my friend and i were shooting his 870 and it had a few FTE's, i asked him how many rounds had been through it since its last cleaning and he said hes never cleaned it, and its had about 10k rounds through it. i showed him how to strip it down (it was my first time doing it, and it was very simple), and it hasnt jammed in the few hundred rounds since.

I'll third that. It depends on your budget, but all of those five will serve you well. My only suggestion would be to get both a rifled and smooth bore barrel. It's nice to have both and you'll usually save on the cost by purchasing it with both barrels.

The Mossberg Maverick 88 that I'm selling here is perfect for you!

But like others said any of the "major" names are good. Also it depends on your budget as most of them can range from a couple hundred to well over $500. The Mav 88 that I'm selling was my HD gun, as it felt & shot great in its current setup, and was easy to carry & conceal at home. A Mossberg 500 would've been the same setup, but I like the safety switch location on the Mav 88 more since it feels more natural with your index finger releasing the safety when your hand is on the grip. My old Benelli SuperNova tactical felt really good to carry & shoot, but was just way too big & long to use in a true home defense situation... unless you live on a huge farm or a mansion with large rooms.

Ditto to what FatalKitty said. You asking us about this -v-that is like asking us if you should wear boxers or briefs. We can point out the benifits of both but like kitty said, get out there and get them in you hands, shoulder them, look at the features and the quality and this will help you decide.

I am partial to the 870 as I used in my career and trusted my life to then and now. A lot comes down to what you want the weapon for, how much is in your wallet and how much this weapon is going to be used. I get 40+ year old 870's in from guys to turn them into tactical shotguns and these old weapons are still running like clocks. Get an 870, any model, and it will be in your family for the rest of the time you are on this old rock.

It's kinda' like 'what's the best car'...no real answer, something you have to check out for yourself.

I personally prefer an Ithaca model 37...yours and others' mileage may definitely vary.

Go back about 4 pages on this forum and read until you get to the end of page 1...you'll get the idea.

if I can sway you in any one direction, I would go with the time tested rem 870.
I've put over 2000 rnds through mine in 4 weeks, it shoots every time... simple, tactical, just the perfect setup for hd or anything really

Generally it boils down to a 870 or a Mossberg 500/590.

More importantly goto the range and test them out. I like the Mossberg due to the location of the safety which is on the top of the receiver. It allows you actuate the safety without having to move your shooting hand away from a ready position. It however sucks if you aren't usually a traditional stock and opt for a stock that utilizes a pistol grip.

Shoot both [or more] and make your decision from there. For what it's worth I own a 590A1.

Auto: Benelli M4 or M1/M2($1000+)

Mandatory:
A magazine that can hold about 7 rounds
Side Saddle
sling (very handy when going between weapon systems)
Ghost ring sights
Tactical Shotgun class by somebody who knows shotgun gun fighting.

Perks:
Parkerized or some other coating.
Surefire flashlight forend. (those little clip on are a joke... people are welcome to disagree... just my opinion) (not available for M4)
Butt-Cuff (not sure I spelled that right)
A follower you can actually differentiate
Smoothed out action (pump)

Ignore:
Tritium night sights... one shot at night you wont know its tritium anymore (I've tried)
Breaching... unless you plan on doing breaching... then sure!
