I should last weekend about 100 12ga rounds on a 28" shooting trap without a limbsaver and I didn't bruise at all. I was impressed.

I know they used to be fixed chokes, but the last combo I checked out at Big 5 about a year ago had a removeable choke tube in it. I'm not sure when they changed, maybe the same time they changed the forearms on them, they used be the ribbed style now they're not.

I checked one out about two weeks ago and it had fixed choke barrels (both the 18" and the 28") and thats the only reason I didn't buy it.

If anyone goes to Big5 this weekend please check it out and post what you find. I will double check myself just in case I missed something. I had an 870 Express and sold it because the quality was pretty weak. I would love to pick up a Mossberg combo if they do have removable chokes.

Best deal for a shotty at Big 5 IMO is the Interstate Arms Hawk 982. $200 on sale, 10% off sale price coupon, you're looking at $220 out the door for a kick *** 12 gauge.

If you are looking into the Mossberg Combo and don't care about the 28" barrel, seriously look into the Turner's Mossberg Maverick 88 for $199. OTD is around $240 and it's exactly the same as the Big5 Mossberg Combo, only without the extra barrel and the safety location is in the same place as the Benelli Nova & SNT shotguns (perfect spot IMO). Everything else internal & external is the same (I have the Mav88, my neighbor has the Mossberg Combo - stripped down completely the parts are the same & interchangable)

I have an 887 (wife won it at a dinner) and it's a slick gun. I have not shot it however.

I would assume if your not used to shooting you will improperly mount the gun sometimes and therefore punish yourself. No worries man, glad your hooked. Heck every year in the duck blind I get hung up in my coat or something goes arry and I'm shooting at ducks off my bicep. Rarely do I get them and yes, it hurts and ends up leaving a bruise but it's no big deal.

As far as recoil it goes like this

Turkey loads = slugged in shoulder by Mike Tyson in his prime

Duck/goose loads = slugged in shoulder by your high school bully

Trap loads = a loving carees on the shoulder by Christina Hendricks

Big 5 is hit or miss and sometimes has some good deals.

the mossberg barrels are fixed choke (at least when i bought mine a year ago). but you can get a mossberg barrel that excepts different chokes and i dont think theyre too expensive.

I'm in the category of having bought a fixed choke and getting ready for Dove season. Any suggestions on where to purchase a barrel that accepts chokes and if it doesn't violate terms the highest amount I should be paying for this?

Midway and Cabelas both carry Mossberg barrels. I paid $159 from Cabelas for a 24 in ported, with vent rib and choke tubes for my 500. It's a great barrel with a large white bead and a very nice brass mid-bead. I broke the first 20 clays I pointed it at when the barrel was brand new. I bought from Cabelas because Midway was out of stock at the time.

That barrel will do everything for me from clays to dove and quail to turkey. Some like them a little longer, but that's just how I roll.

ETA : This is the barrel I bought but at Midway. It's showing $169 for price.

                              www.ableammo.com has the 24" & 28" mossberg 500 barrels for $153.71.

I checked with Big 5 today and I guess I was wrong the combos have a fixed choke. Oh well, It's still a great gun at a good price.
