Mossberg 500, or Rem 870.

I've had a Mossberg 500a, 8-shot for years, like 20 or so years, and it has worked great.

00 buck for that shotgun for HD

Didn't read whole thread. 00 buck is not a good choice for HD. More so when you have love ones in the next room as OP stated. 00 buck can go in and out of both sides of a car trunk. (did it myself) Saw on TV that it went pass a icebox. So if you have someone or something in the next room you care about go with 4buck.

Since I plan to relocate all of my 00 pellets into the bad guy... I am okay with double 00. I have done tactical training and I practice. I don't care to mess with my penetration value. Last thing I want to do is use any more time on the trigger than I have to. When comparing the 00 and #4 the choice is clear. Always know where your projectiles are going as you are responsible for where they go!

mossberg 500, FTW!! it's the only pump action shotgun the military trusts because it's the only one strong enough to stand up to their tests. Remy 870 failed along with all the others. seriously, mossberg 500 is the best way to go!!!

can get a great package at Big 5 for under $300

My 870 is an old CHP gun. I took it out after over 15 years of sitting. The gun was bone dry. I took it to the range and it still fired as reliable as the day it was purchased... I then lubed it up and allowed it to work smoothly. I have done about 600 hundred rounds since with out a single cleaning. Bottom line... I trust my 870. (yes I will clean it!)

reason: an all steel construction weapon is not going to be as cheap for the military as an aluminum receiver mossy.

i'll take milled steel over cast aluminum any day. 870 ftw

I currently own the Remington 870 works like a charm. But man I wish I could get the Benelli M4!

You are looking at $250 - $450 or so depending on model / configuration.

A Mossberg 500 Combo for example is a good one to pick IMO, where you can usually get them on sale at Big 5 for a bit under $300 and come with a short 18" barrel (suitable for HD) and a long sporting barrel which is good for shooting clays on the weekends. Just swap barrels depending on your intended use, and only is done just using a single thumb screw.

That said the Rem 870 is an excellent choice, feels a bit more solid too. I just like the Mossy 500 Combo cause it is less expensive and the two barrels for less than a Rem 870 with only one makes for a bit more bang for your buck if you are on a budget. Both have excellent reliability and have US military or LEO credentials to back up their basic designs (regardless of what any fanboys say about how their favorite is the only good one and the other just sucks - bunch of BS).

I like 870's...

Remington 870's feel and handle better for me. The Mossberg pump seems a bit clumsy in comparison.

I have always felt secure with my Rossi Coach Gun. Simple and effective, no safeties to deal with in a stressful situation. Excellent for the novice as well. A short side by side just handles beautifully. Light weight, compact, and just points very naturally. Just pull the two exposed hammers back all the way and you're ready to go.

The Rossi Overland is also used frequently in movies and cowboy action because it combines a period look with modern construction. Usually kinda hard to find but I do have mine up for sale in the firearms for sale section.

I have the Rem 870. Purchased it after I had a chance to handle and shoot both the Rem and Mossberg. You won't go wrong either way or just get both.

if i would use a shotgun for HD i would turn to my 870P. however, i have old w german sigs that i have for that purpose. good luck with your search and purchase....

I vote Mossberg or Remington 870. I suggest handling both and seeing what you are most comfortable with. I have a Remington 870, and Mossberg 500 Tactical. I owned the 870 first, but when I handled my friend's Mossberg 500 tactical, I fell in love with it. The 870 feels a little long to me when I handle it for some reason. The Mossberg 500 tactial fit me like a glove. It also has an adjustable stock, which is an added bonus. Only downside of the 500 tactical is it is a 5 +1.

Check out Ade's gun shop in Orange; they usually have a small but decent selection of home defense/"tactical" shotguns. They're usually overpriced but sometimes you'll happen across a deal.

I have both the 500 and 870.

The 500 was my first shotgun, bought it about 18 years ago. Its just a pump I used for everything... trap, hunting, and HD. I got an old used barrel and cut it for HD. It is crazy reliable. I had jamming occur just one time... and thats after many rds w/o cleaning and years of sitting in a gun locker then a rushed day out to shoot some last minute trap... a shoty of oil and its GTG.

I would say this 500 has had somewhere around 25,000 rds through it over the years. (Back in the day, a walmart in idaho had federal 12g target for $6.99//100 !)


Now... Ive had an 870 security for several years now. -- a Big5 $199 special.

Its definately heavier, but "feels" strong and has been very reliable.

Short answer... 500 or 870, it doesnt matter. As long as you run it enough to know its reliable and are very comfortable with it.
