    Home Defense Shotgun... ???

    Hi All,

Noob here, so please excuse me if my questions have already been answered.

I don't know much about shotguns, I have a hand gun, Sig Sauer P226 .40 at home for home defense. (thinking about getting a Sig P229, or one of the HK compacts, USPc 40, or P2000, maybe even a 1911.)

    I'm married & a father of 3 lil girls, 5, 3, 1. We live in a relatively safe neighborhood.

However, at some point, I'd want to have a shotgun at home for home defense. Which leads me to my question. If I want to spend less than $1k... preferably closer to $500... what are my best options? Brands? etc etc... any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

    Mossberg 500, or Rem 870.

I've had a Mossberg 500a, 8-shot for years, like 20 or so years, and it has worked great.

00 buck for that shotgun for HD

      thanks! I'll look into it.
What would be a reasonable price for them?

Mossbergs can be had for about 250$ for a basic 500 model give or take 30-40$
Remington 870 about 300 give or take
Either shotgun will work just fine. There are fans of both guns so the question really is which one is more comfortable/easy to operate for YOU. I would either try to see if someone will lend you theirs to shoot or go tot he store and at least handle each model to see which is more comfortable.

The Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 are the quintessential shotguns for home defense. They're both reliable shotguns with a proven track record and I don't think you can go wrong with either one. The main difference between them is the manual of arms (position of safety, slide release, and operation of shell holder). There are a lot of reviews on the net as well as youtube so check them out during your research.

I'm a remington 870 fan but will say that you really cant go wrong with either one for a HD gun. I think the 870's have a much more sold feel to them and like the position of the safety (some people prefer the tang safety on mossbergs) both can be had for a decent price. I gota remington 870HD for 410 bucks out the door it's a 7 shot 12 guage with a 18 inch barrel. All I did was add a hogue 12LOP stock on it for ease of handling in tight spaces (since I'm not a very big guy) and a sling with a 6 shot mesa tactical side saddle. I will probably add light eventually but for now I feel that a simple set up is king and thats why mine stays right next to my bed. If you get the big 5 paper they usually have sales on mossbergs and remingtons fairly often. Go in a gun store and handle a mossberg and a remington 870 and pick wich one you like more!

mossberg 500, FTW!! it's the only pump action shotgun the military trusts because it's the only one strong enough to stand up to their tests. Remy 870 failed along with all the others. seriously, mossberg 500 is the best way to go!!!

can get a great package at Big 5 for under $300

You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

Do you know ANYTHING about the military? It's not because it was the best and most reliable it's because it meet the minimum requirements and cost less than other competitors. Remingotn 870's have been in service in the military as well bud...

This week Big 5 in the Bay Area has a Mossy 500 sale for $278, see if you can find a 10% off coupon and you are set, the extra $200 you can spend in a combo of ammo and accessories like tac light or ghost site.

They have the Remington 870 Express for $329
Mossberg Security for $279. (is that the same as the 500?)
What about the Benelli Nova for $349? How does that compare?

                            Mossberg 500 or Remington 870.

Seriously, look no further unless you have a very small budget or very specialized requirements.

Check Big 5 every now and then they have good prices on them with the barrel combo.
