agreed! love, love, love shooting shotguns. nothing like driving out to the desert, blasting away at some dunes until your shoulder is raw and bruised. budget ammo, high variability. love it for self-defense purposes as well. if anyone breaks into my home, i would grab my shotgun before any of my handguns or rifles.

your shoulder doesnt need to be raw and bruised, get a knoxx spec ops stock and throw a limbsaver on it and you can shoot an entire box of 100 rounds of birdshot and all the slugs and magnum 00buck and not feel a thing the next day. I love shooting the sh*t out of stuff and not having my arm/shoulder/body hurt the next day. In fact, I bought my mossberg 590 just to test the knoxx system out and it worked so well that it was worth it. The best thing about mossbergs are they they are super cheap, 100% reliable, hold more rounds them others and with the system mentioned, you don't feel a damn thing at all and just watch your targets disappear as you blow them away!agreed! love, love, love shooting shotguns. nothing like driving out to the desert, blasting away at some dunes until your shoulder is raw and bruised. budget ammo, high variability. love it for self-defense purposes as well. if anyone breaks into my home, i would grab my shotgun before any of my handguns or rifles.

We were just out at panoche over the weekend, one hornady SST red tip 2 3/4"
went through two quarter inch steel plates like butter. And with a 20" smoothbore barrel w/ghost rings we were putting slugs on a 2' by 2' square in the center at over 100yds. Follow that with some clay pigeons, and you have a pretty useful tool for $450, $500.Comment

Knoxx stocks are nice and do work, but with proper technique, you can fire slugs all day using a factory stock with a buttpad in decent shape and not bruise your shoulder.your shoulder doesnt need to be raw and bruised, get a knoxx spec ops stock and throw a limbsaver on it and you can shoot an entire box of 100 rounds of birdshot and all the slugs and magnum 00buck and not feel a thing the next day. I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!Comment

i can't say i love my shotguns more than my bolt action rifles or my semi-auto's BUT there really is nothing that will be like a 1 oz shotgun shell
especially those awsome three inch magnum mo-fo's - after a long day of shooting those you will be sore, i warn youI mainly shoot .22lr, 9mm,45 acp, 357 & 38, 12G, 7.62x39, .308, .223/556, 7.62x54r, 300 win mag, 8x57God Bless USAComment

I love shotguns too. It does feel different than picking up a rifle or gun. It's like you won the battle already if there was one. I'd be naked without it.

Some really good quotes here...a belt fed & mounted SAW-type shotgun...omg! Talk about making a hole for an exit.
If your into finding new and interesting things to shoot, & trying the effect of different loads, the simplicity of a shotgun can provide real entertainment.
Take a material (2 pieces of sheetrock with a 2x4 between, particle board, steel, ...whatever) the dramatic effect of a group of holes or particularly large hole in comparison to single rounds from other weapons always makes me think "genius!"
Versatility is right. Options for sport and game are a plenty. But as a combat/defensive weapon it has a unique universal appeal.
For instance, the distinct shape and cocking sound of a pump action has an attribute that is instantly recognizable to all, as if there is a unique chemical that travels between the sphincter and the brain that tells someone who finds ones self on the wrong end:
"If you prefer the current configuration of your face or vital organs...run NOW!
My favorites so far:
...it really drives home the message of; "I hate you" the best.

What I really want is a SAW that shoots buckshot or slug ammo.

A blunderbuss is like a shotgun, but so is a tricycle, depending on how broad your terms are.
