Ah yes good question OP:

Trap: There are 5 different "stations" a few feet apart, 16 yards away from the traphouse, and you rotate threw them. In Trap the clays fly away from you.
Skeet: (Ive never shot, just seen, so dont quote me on this )In Skeet the targets come from random directions. Away, across, over etc.
Sporting Clays: Is a course that id say are around half a mile-ish. There you from station to station, in which there are ten total. At each statoin you shoot five times, with two shots and two targets each. The targets come out out of bumf*** nowhere from random directions. Its hard, but really fun.

I think a major difference is that in trap and skeet, the presentations are consistent; thereby allowing the shooter to be in the correct position while anticipating the the pre-determined lead needed for each station.
Sporting clays vary the layout from time to time; so just when you think that you have it down pat, they change it around a little bit.

haha.. i really hit most of the targets.. i duno leaning forward slightly helped me for some reason.

i have only shot Skeet and this is what i can tell you (bear with me, it was about 9 years ago)

there is a semi circle with a bunch of stations and a high house and a low house that shoot clays across the playing feild from left to right and vicey versey.

on some of the stations you get 2 clays at once, from opposite directions. if you time your shot perfectly when they cross a pole in the middle of the playing feild you can shoot them both at once. i did it my first and only time shooting skeet and it was a hoot. by the end of the game you have shot 25 shells and are generally having fun! sorry for the horribly vague account!

I would recommend Trap to start... I find it the easiest.

Skeet is just fast, really fast if you've never tried it before.

Sporting clays is fun, different stations/presentations.

Trap is a good clays game to start with. It doesn't really replicate hunting situations, but gives a good course of learning how to shoot stuff on the fly which is not nearly as easy as it seems or looks some days.

Skeet is a bit harder, lots of doubles, the illustration above of a skeet field is pretty self explanatory.

Sporting clays and five stand sporting clays are fun, more closely approximate hunting and are very addictive. At least for me.

Maybe a member should take him to a club.
I am always looking for an shotguning excursion excuse to give to the "Boss" (that I married), so's I can bust some clays for a good cause...Maybe a Calguns event is in order at some southern, central and northern Cal spots!
