    Mossberg 500 Question

I purchased a Mossberg 500 Combo today at Big 5, the one that comes with two barrels. I looked on the Mossberg website and was looking at the different chokes. The chokes are on this page http://www.mossberg.com/products/acc...section=access and I was wondering if I would be able to change out the chokes on my gun. It says it worked with the Mossberg 500, but on the top of the page it says "Most Mossberg shotguns come with screw in chokes" I am curious to see if mine is one of them. Any owners out there have any input on that?

I bought one of these mossberg combos also from big 5 back in the late 90's.

Let me know if you have any problems with your safety sticking or in general just messing up. I have only ever shot 100 rounds through mine and that was all shot at one sitting and haven't shot it in well over 10 years because it seems like the recoil screws up the safety mechanism. After I fire the gun it's like the safety gets jammed in the safe mode. Moving the safety switch up and down doesn't seem to do anything to free it up. If you keep tugging at the trigger, it will decide to work and fire when the gun feels like working and firing. With the safety in "fire" I can tug and tug on the trigger and it's just like the safety is on. Keep tugging on the trigger and eventually it will break free and fire.

This is by far the most unrealible firearm I have ever owned. I have even thought about taking it to a police Dept and have them destroy it LOL (seriously though). I would rather trust my life to a Red Ryder than this. Only paid $220 for it new with the two barrels but would be nice if I could get the issue sorted, so I can actually use it. Then there is other times when it ejects a unfired shell right out the bottom, instead of loading it in the barrel. I can live with that problem since it didn't happen a lot but not the trigger safety problem it has.

I have heard some say it's the cheap plastic saftey and can be upgraded to an all metal unit. Haven't looked into it more but would be nice to get this gun working. I want to get a heat shield and houge pistol grip for it but don't feel like putting money into it with this issure it has.

I'm going try it again this weekend and use 2-3/4 shells. I may have used 3" shells the other time (can't remember) and maybe the recoil was too much for the plastic safety to handle, even though it should, since it says it can use 3' shells. Maybe if I was using 3" shells the shorter ones will cycle better too.

O i c, that sucks then, guess I'll just have to deal with it.

chad68 - I havn't heard of issues with the safety like yoiu're talking about, but I'll let you know if it happens with mine as well. As for the shells falling out the bottom, maybe it has something to do with the Mossbergs not having a loading ramp thing on the bottom like the remington 870's do?
And if I were you, I would've called mossberg and had them fix the safety problem when I first bought it.

Chad68... call Mossberg's customer service folks. Even a few years down the line that is a very unsafe situation that they should be willing to look at.

The combo guns are not set up for choke tubes.

Well I took half my guns out today including the Mossberg 500 to go make some noise. I was using 2-3/4" winchester shells (7.5 birdshot stuff). I only put about 20 rounds through it and it did not eject out unfired shells like it did the last time I shot it. That problem didn't happen this time out. It also didn't do the other problem with the safety acting like it was stuck either. Only minor thing I noticed was sometimes chambering rounds. I would have to sometimes use the slide release button to rack it back to load the next round.

Still kicks like a damn Mule like I remember.

            EDIT:

After thinking about it, I think I know why I was having to use the slide release button to load a round. Seemed like it was only doing it on the first shot, not the others. Duh if the hammer isn't down, only way you can load a round is if the pin is down or if it's up and use the slide release button. What I was doing is after my last shot, I would rack the slide a couple times and do a visual safety check, then close the slide, without dry firing it, which locks the slide.

            I'm retarded.

I have the big 5 combo as well and I love it. I put the Hogue Tamer pistol grip and forend on it. Never had any problems and I've fired 700+ shells and cleaned it only once. Thing is like a tank.

Stang, Were you able to install the foregrip without modifications? I've heard there are compatability issues with the forends not being compatible with big 5 model 500's

did you strip and clean the gun? some times it gets gunky in there with all the stock grease. you gotta keep them clean and lubed up. My 590 has never had a single problem but then again I do keep it clean.

Great gun for the money. Love mine. No chokes - no worry. You'll hit the orange discs w/out them. Have fun!

                          to the OP:
I don't think the big 5 combo 28" barrel comes threaded for chokes, but not to worry, you can buy a 500 barrel that does come threaded if you really need to be able to use chokes. Also, yes you can put a pistol grip on it, there's nothing illegal about that. i run my HD setup with the 18.5" barrel and a pistol grip. i just found out you can buy 18.5" barrels with "breaching" muzzle brakes, so that's my next purchase for my HD setup

I'm getting the same Hogue pistol grip as well and a heat shield. Think I'm just going to use the stock fore grip, unless your install goes fairly easier. I've heard about fitting issues with aftermarket forearm stocks and vertical grips requiring some Dremal work.

Also going to finish up buffing/polishing my 18.5" barrel I started doing over 10 years ago and never got around to finishing. Lost the bead sight to it a long time ago but with the pistol grip won't make any diff anyway, unless I want to knock my teeth out trying to use the bead site.
