    Pistol Grip: Proper Technique

I just changed out my stock on my Winchester 1300 Defender for a PG. Can you tell me the proper technique for shooting with it?

    Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Grab on good. Get a firm grip on it. Any way of shooting is A-ok as long as its no where near your face.

I never heard of any specific, proper technique to shoot a pistol grip.

It does hurt a bit, but I use gloves, so its not that bad.

If you just wanted to play at the range, it may be wise to grab a wrist support brace if you blow through the rounds. After a while it stars to hurt (3" 00). Get a good grasp on the grip.

if you got a knoxx specop stock, you can hold it one handed and shoot 3 inch mag slugs with one hand and it doesnt hurt!!!

any who, dont put it near your face or you might be loosing some teeth. Last time I went to the range, I saw a guy get a mouth full of shotgun handle and it split his lip wide open. He was splitting out blood for over half an hour! Live and learn...

Tactical guys would teach you to keep a consistent grip across pistol, shotgun, and carbine, which would mean a "high tang" grip. It would have the benefit of putting your hand closer to the axis of the barrel, which would help you control recoil.

Same as you would for any handgun. You want your hand as close to the barrel centerline as the grip or slide action will allow.

I've got one from ATI on my winchester 1300, and it's great. I really like the Pistol-Grip-Only shotguns. Most don't, because it's more of a point and shoot vs aim and shoot. Once you learn where to point it, it's easy.

i thought mostly you have to be able to see down the top of the gun to shoot, so aim and shoot most of the time.

That's what was being discussed above.
With a PG shotgun, if you hold it up like a pistol, you're going to have some missing teeth.

Personally, I would not use a PG shotgun for anything other than home defense, and with a laser sight.

I was going to say the same. Don't raise the shotgun up to use the front sight. You will lose teeth.

You normally shoot a shotgun like a rifle.
Buttstock FIRMLY held against your shoulder, head canted over looking down the sights.

With a PG and no buttstock, you more "cradle" it along side your body... "shoot from the hip" if you will. Right elbow behind you, right hand just above your navel... if you were to pull it into your body, it would rest right between the top of your hipbone and the bottom of your ribcage.
Left arm roughly straight down, elbow at 90 degrees across your waist.

If you're thinking about a combo pistol grip with telescoping buttstock, I would advise against it. The altered grip position makes it difficult to operate the safety if the safety is mounted to the top of the receiver.

Unless you have a need for a very short CQB shotgun, it really is best for most owners to stick with the original Monte Carlo style buttstock.
The combo PG/Telescoping units are just a mall ninja "tacticool" toy.

The combo PG/fold-over buttstocks are more practical, because they are pure PG for CQB, but can be unfolded to fire conventionally, but they still have the problem of difficulty operating the safety.

thanks. I understand now. I would use pistol grip because I would need the m4 style stock for different possible shooters. pistol grip seems to be what comes with that style adjustable stock.
