    00-Buck.

Some folks say to use bird shot to reduce over-penetration...but that is just ridiculous. Birdshot will still penetrate your walls, and give you the added DISbenefit of NOT giving you the stopping power for a bad guy on crack.

If over penetration is an issue look for the reduced recoil 00 or 000 buck. The LE community is very sensitive to this and this is one of the reasons for "Tactical" or "Reduced Recoil Loads". They will do the job in the up close to medium ranges just fine without the drama of wall after wall after wall penetration.

00 buck and slugs. Know what's behind your target and you wont have to worry about over penetration. If you shoot for below the waist first there is VERY little chance you'll penetrate a wall and kill someone in the other room/next apartment/ down the street. That is, unless they happen to be sitting right up against the wall which is what we call being in the wrong place at the worst possible time. Shoot them in the legs and if they're still a threat, the at least wont be standing and you can blast into your floor if need be.......unless someone lives below you (though i doubt you'll penetrate your floor and their roof)......like i said: KNOW WHAT'S BEHIND YOUR TARGET AT ALL TIMES!!!!

Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

I've been loading up with #1 Buck for years. I give up .03" and 14gr per pellet but gain 7 to 11 pellets per cartridge. A 16 pellet load of #1 is over 200gr heavier than 9 00 Buck pellets.

00 Buck do not candy cane (buck/slug/buck/slug). Learn to selective reload with your SG if you think you need that slug. If you are worried about penetration take a knee and shoot up at an angle.

                            Just my opinions:

                            1) Do not mix and match. This is just plain silly. Keep 00-Buck loads in your mag well, and a few slugs on a side carrier. (On your person. your stock, or on the side of your receiver). Just practice loading slugs, individually, as part of your HD practice routine.

                            2) If you need to sohot someone because your life is in danger (because that is the ONLY situation that dictates taking a life)...make sure your life is in danger, and shoot to KILL. (Stop the attack immediately). If you purposely shoot an attacker in the legs, there is A CHANCE that procecutors, or the defendants attorney, will have you paying their medical expenses for the rest of his natural life.

                            3) 00-Buck rules supreme. Even if the total COMBINED load of #1-Buck is heavier, it does NOT have the stopping power of the 00-Buck INDIVIDUAL buck-shot. The #1 buck-shots are traveling as a group (or cloud) which makes it heavier as a whole. But when they actually hit the target, it is the INDIVIDUAL BUCK SHOTS that will penetrate and cause the immediate damage to the vitals. Or in layman's terms, will cause the fastest and most probable internal damage to stop of the bad guy on crack. (Dynamic "Uumph/Thump" does not stop bad guys on crack. Destruction of internal organs - massive blood loss or nerve destruction - stops bad guys on crack).

                            Shoot with a purpose.

                            In Christ: Raymond

PS: I've read the article above on #1-Buck loads. But I am a civilian, not LE, so over-penetration is not a factor for me. Deep wound ballistics and massive internal damage are paramount for immediate stoppage. This trumps everything else.
