Wasn't this posted before or am I experiencing de ja vu?
Anyways, the 870 and the mossberg 500 are very comparable shotguns. Its like Ford vs. Chevy, it depends on your preference and what you want to do. 870 in my opinion has more accessories and options to turn it into a combat shotgun and that's currently what I own. As far as breaking in, there are a lot of youtube videos out there that give good advice and I suggest you follow the quote below:
You can go to www.aiptactical.com and under the customer service link, you will find a link "Breaking in the 870" follow that and you will break it in right and your reward will be a super smooth shotgun. And by god rack the thing like you have a pair.Last edited by Noraku81; 11-30-2009, 5:21 PM.Batteries die...IRON LASTS FOREVER!!! -
Super Steve, welcome to CalGuns! The two top choices are going to be the Remington 870, and the Mossberg 500 or 590. Both are great guns, and they each have their pros and cons. I have an 870, I like the way it feels, I have shot the Mossberg, and it was similar, but I like my 870 just a little bit better. You can get a bunch of accessories for both. What do you plan on using the gun for? Home Defense, Skeet, scaring away your daughters boyfriends
, a little bit of both??

870 is pretty easy to break down, don't worry too much about that bit when doing research. I don't own one and I figured it out in about 10 minutes. Just make sure you have an ice pick or something small and slender you can use to pop out the FCG pins.
As to which to get between a remmy and a mossy, figure out which style of safety you like best...that seems to be the sticking for most.sigpic

I really like this gun linkand think I might try to build mine similar, right now Turners has a sale on a 870 express with the mag extension and 18in barrel with synthetic stock for $329, I figure I can just buy the wood stock separate. I was even looking at the 500 roadblock but I don't want people to think im a mall ninja
Thanks for the tips so far.Comment

Another consideration, if it is useful for you, is that the 870 allows for a magazine extension to be added very readily. Not so much for the 500. I have both, and if it came down to a choice, the 870 would be the "keeper" here."Mr. Rat, I have a writ here that says you are to stop eating Chen Lee's cornmeal forthwith. Now, It's a rat writ, writ for a rat, and this is lawful service of same!"Comment

I'm going to head down to turners tomorrow and check them out, maybe start the process of buying one, the 10 day waiting period will give me time to figure out anything else I don't know about.Comment

Well I bought it today! Can pick it up in 10 days, do you guys think it would be a good idea to pick up some dummy rounds for practicing loading/unloading?Comment

Yes. Much better to use snap-caps, or de-primed and powdered dummys to learn a weapon. Sure if you keep your finger off the trigger the odds of an accident are very small, but if it's a dummy round, the odds are zero. They're also useful as training aids, if you're going to load 3 rounds, put 3 shells and 3 dummies in you pocket and load them at random, you won't know if it will go boom or not, helps you practice clearing a jam and reveal any flinch you may have.
Bought an 870 at Turners today myself. I've shot the HD version a few times and liked it, bought the 28" vent/rib, comes to aim and swings great, and it's fairly well balanced too.Comment

I downloaded a copy of the manual on my phone and looked it over a few times, I still need to buy some ear protectors, and a gun cleaning kit. I don't think I need a lock since I'm keeping it in my grandfathers gun safe. I'm up to go shhoting any time after I get it.Comment
