Ok well I have a cleaning rod from my .22 cleaning kit, so I guess all I need is some cleaning soltuion (what do you guys suggest?), some RemOil (or do you guys think I should go with something else), a 12 gauge brush, and cleaning swabs, and a wire brush for cleaning the trigger assembly.

I think thats all I need, as far as cleaning goes right?

Got it Friday, stripped it, cleaned it, practiced loading/unloading, and took it to Burro Canyon on Tuesday, shot about 50 rounds of 7.5 birdshot.

Great gun and I am loving it, might pick up a .22 too now because shells are not cheap

yea it isn't to bad, but I don't think I can afford (or my shoulder could handle) a full day of shooting shotgun only.

I bought a 10/22, can pick it up this Sunday!

The 870 is an awesome weapon. It's one of those legendary guns like the P228 or AK47. You can't go wrong with it. It's reliable and has plenty accessories. Believe me, you'll end up buying every little do dad out there for your gun. The ONLY downside some folks have mentioned is that you can't attach a bayonet easily. The Mossy can take one easier.

Big 5 will often sell you an 870 for their sale price even after the sale is over; this varies from Big 5 to Big 5.

Very cool. Now you gotta trick it out!

Gotta add a side saddle, magazine extension, Knoxx recoil adjusting or Speedfeed stock...and on and on...

I have a few A-Zoom SnapCaps dummy rounds for all my guns. Not only for practicing loading and reloading but for clearing jams and for dry fire practice. There is a set procedure for clearing different types of jams, and drills you need to work on to improve your speed and accuracy in real life situations. Practice makes perfect, and a pretty good amount of it accures at home rather than on a firing range. Dummy rounds not only protect the firing pin during dry fire practice, but allow you to perform the necessary drills without the obvious risk of using live rounds.

Make darn sure that it is completely unloaded before doing any of the above...

Big 5 is having some pretty decent sales on BOTH shotguns. Now they're not going to know JACK S about guns but they got some pretty cheap stuff.

870 or 500 are pretty much the same. I think the 500 felt cheaper because of the plastic, but it also felt slimmer and had easier to use controls.

I think the 870 has more accessories plus it's a remington.

They're also useful as training aids, if you're going to load 3 rounds, put 3 shells and 3 dummies in you pocket and load them at random, you won't know if it will go boom or not, helps you practice clearing a jam and reveal any flinch you may have.
I know I'm replying to an old post in this thread, but I just wanted to point out that although hang-fires are rare, they do happen, and this could cause a dangerous situation - especially with someone that is new to shooting, and may not be aware of what hang-fires are.

In case you don't know, a hang-fire is when you pull the trigger, hear "Click", and then several seconds later, "Boom"! If you ever experience a 'dud', don't extract the live ammo immediately. It's best to wait 60 seconds to be sure it's not a hang-fire.

in my opinion it is never a good idea to mix dummy rounds with live ammo. There are other (safer) ways to get over flinching.

Oh, and congrats on the 870 supersteve9219. The remington 870 was my second firearm purchase. It's a great gun, and only gets better with use.

The 870 is the way to go. It has an unlimited amount of upgrades. Also really easy to maintain!
