None. Military grade buckshot probably may have something fancy in it, like wads for controlling flight, but I doubt it."Ok, sign language 101. This means stay low, this means stack up, and this means I'm gonna punch your lights out if you don't shut up!" -

ahhhh the mil spec theory...its funny, call something mil spec and people will spend extra $$$$$$! "military grade" shotshells equate to lots of production, cost effective down and dirty ammo. You will get MUCH better "quality" buying the commercial stuff, but for its intended purpose its just another shotgun catridge. Nothing fancy, this cam about for MOUT warfare, clearing a room with a shotty will put haji down big time and wont give him time to fire like an m4 will. The energy from those pellets will put him down, for good. If its a good deal, buy it. If its more expensive, dont waste the duckets
Embrace the suck.

I look at mil-spec as a minimum standard not a quality standard. Berreta M-9 is the military hand gun, but that means nothing as for it being better then my Colt, your Glock or XD or anything else in your safe.....Mil-spec also means "Lowest Bidder". In the gun world it used to be put "Magnum" on it and it will sell, then came "Tactical" and "Police" and it will sell. Today the "Mil-Spec" is the new marketing ploy.........JD McGuire, Owner

I found the green milspec stuff to pattern like absolute crap, while having the additional 'bonus' of having a lot of recoil.
The Federal full-power 'flight control' 9-pellet 00 Buck seems to pattern/shoot the best for me. The Nobel Sport 12-pellet 00 Buck is a close second, is widely available and at a decent price ... so that's my standard 00 round these days.Comment

When i pattern tested the Winchester Q1544 USGI 00 Buck it performed very poorly. Patterns were over 30" at 25 yards. Heavy recoil. Large muzzle flash. The shot is unplated lead shot. You can get federal flight control buck for less money and it will perform better.Comment

I bought a few boxes of the Winchester "mil-grade" at Big 5 on sale a while back. It's nothing special from what I've found shooting it.

I bought some Federal Flight controls and tested em out about a week ago. At 7 yards, there was no pattern, just a large hole. At 12 yards the pattern spread a bit, but still the tighest groups I have ever seen with 00 buck.
Also they were 18.95 for 5 boxes ( 25 total), talk about a deal! The "best" handgun caliber debate rages on, meanwhile I just keep buying low recoil 00 buck.Comment

If the intended use of this load is for close range (room to room, down a hall, etc.), does this mean it could perform well for in-home defense? If there is no intention of shooting past 20yds or so, is this load any worse than the tight-patterning "tactical" type loads? Too bad this load isn't a reduced recoil one, either.
I understand that a tight patterning buckshot load essentially extends the useful range by keeping the pattern relatively narrow and minimizing dispersion. This also sounds like it making close range target hits is less forgiving in that it does not take advantage of a more rapidly dispersing load pattern then this mil-spec load. Is this an accurate interpretation?Comment

As far as I'm concerned the only advantage to the military rounds is they aren't bright red with shiny brass bases. In other words they don't show up like a sore thumb in a bandoleer."Government is the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else." --FREDERIC BASTIAT--
