The three are shell sizes (length) . Some shotguns will chamber one or a variety of the three depending on chamber length which is always marked on the barrel.

Could you narrow down your inquiry a little? Is there a particular type of shotgun, or application that you're looking into?

A shotgun I can use wal mart value packs with I don't really have a preference, but if I ever went to angeles I might wanna try shooting some clays so whatever you recommend for that, possibly 300-600 dollar range.

This board is just like most others, including wiki...you don't trust an answer on the web unless you double or triple check. If you check the shotgun gallery here, you'll undoubtedly see a ton of shotguns that appear to be the result of crossing a wet dream with a video game..

You know about opinions

Inexpensive + reliable = (at least to me) a Remington 870 pump or 1100 semi-auto, although you'll get a bunch of other opinions. Both are not too much $$, go bang when you pull the trigger, are easy to modify (e.g. different length barrels for different disciplines), and easy to resell if you want something else. Personally, I'd start with a used gun, shoot it for a while, and then sell it if you want something else or keep it. As an example, a step up from the 1100 might be a Beretta semi.

Browning makes very nice guns in both pump and semi. I have more sg's than I'd like to admit; I like to hunt birds with a couple of Beretta over/unders. I started with a Mossberg 500 which I still use for ducks & geese...kind of a starting gun equivalent to the 870 but (at least imo) a lot looser in construction. It's 20+ years old, it's killed a lot of birds and it still shoots when the trigger is pulled.

If your not sure what you want to use it for (hunting, skeet, home defense, etc.) I would recommend a pump action shotgun. Just like anyone else will tell you, your two best choices would be between the Mossberg 500 and the Remington 870.

Pump action shotguns are generally less expensive than either auto-loaders or side by sides, and once you decide what you want to use your shotgun for, you can customize with new barrels, stocks, forends, sights, lasers, the sky is the limit!! (Seriously, go check out the gallery. Some of these guys have some crazy stuff! )

Ahh.. a nice over & under will run about 12-1800.00 These are prefered for trap and skeet shooting since its much easier to swing the rifle left, right up etc..faster than lets say your semi auto 12 gauge which can be used for clays but if you tried both types you would see what I'm trying to say ( poorly I may add )

Now if your primary use it for lets say duck or geese then you might want a 12ga that can accept 2-3/4 up to 3 or 3-1/2 inch rounds..3 & 3/12 are mostly for goose hunting,,

A decent starter shotty in semi auto..Winchester 1100 or Remington..moving up the chain to Browning, Benelli etc
