    Mossberg vs Remington

The only shotgun I've owned was a Winchester 1300 Defender. I really liked that gun, but I sold it a few years back with the rest of my guns for money.

Now, Big 5 has the Mossberg for under $300, and Turners has the Remington for under $400.

Is there enough of a difference between the two to warrant the $100 difference? I've seen cops and military carry both, so I'm assuming they're both equally as good.

In my opinion and experience the Remington's are just built better than the Mossbergs.

I've seen lots of things fall off Mossbergs, but never really seen it with a Remington.

That's the prevailing opinion around here. I've had a 500 for many years. I finally got rid of one that was almost 50 years old and still going strong. The newer ones might not be built as well though. MY only 870 is a .410 so, I really can't compare the two except that the fit and finish on the .410 is nicer. I can't believe that 870s are starting at $400 now. Wasn't it just about a year or two ago when they could be had for under $300? and, 500 combo kits for $200?

When 870's are on sale they are usually *JUST* over $300. Unless it's an HD model. Then they're usually around the $400 mark.

How does a Remington 870 setup for HD compare to a Winchester 1300 Defender that was also setup for HD?

I always really liked the 1300's. When I played with both, it was really just a matter of aesthetics. I ended up going with an 870, but I don't think you'd go wrong with either. Since I ended up with 870's, I just sort of stuck with 870's. I just liked the way they felt a *TINY* bit more than the 1300's, but I say they are equally well built. (at least, more than 10 years ago when I was really comparing)

Yeah, I bought mine 10 years ago when I was 18. I have a pistol grip and a folding stock with a side saddle and barrel shroud. It was nice looking and fun to shoot with one hand..

Hrmm.. Looks like Winchester doesn't actually make any guns now:

The page or content you were looking for could not be found.

In December, 1980, the Company's Board of Directors authorized the restructuring of the Winchester Group. This restructuring allowed Olin to better focus more of the company's resources on Winchester's sporting and defense ammunition business.

With this restructuring, Winchester's U.S. sporting arms business, which had been part of the company for nearly half a century, was set up as a freestanding operation. In July, 1981, it was sold to the U.S. Repeating Arms Company in New Haven, Connecticut, which now produces Winchester brand rifles and shotguns under license from Olin Corporation.
                The new "Winchester" :
The guns that work with a reputation built on reliability. Winchester rifles and shotguns are built tough, with superior fit and finish allowing parts to function consistently.

Looks like the 1300 is no longer being made. At least under that name.

Yeah, Winchester stopped making guns which really made me sad. I sold my Winchester model '94 30-30 which was my favorite rifle EVER!!!

                    A) Big 5 regularly has sales every week.
                    B) I bought one of the 500's because it fit my hand better. I found without a pistol grip the pump action "button" was placed better for my preference on the mossbergs vs. trying to find an 870 that I thought felt right for the right price.

Any shotgun I have for HD will have a folding stock as hallways aren't very wide.

                        I would put the 300- 400 towards a used 870 Wingmaster before I would buy a new 870 Express.
