    Optic on a shotgun

    I'm getting my first shotty...

A Mossy 500 Just In Case

I was thinking of putting a red dot on it...maybe an EOTECH 511.

What is your overall thoughts about that...

Waste of time??? Anyone running an optic that can chime in...

    Thanks

If you can afford it why not. I would love to have a 511 on my shot gun but that would be the same price as the gun.. Not really practical but if you have the money I say go for it, I know a person who has the 511 on their 870's and love it.

It depends upon what you're going to use the shotgun for. If it's HD or close-range combat, an optic is wasted. You'd be better off getting better irons for it. Any kind of red-dot or aimpoint is just wasted. If it's going to be a rifled shotgun for hunting, a scope is a good idea.

I got a older Mossberg 500a which don't have predrill hole for a rail so I can't install my reddot( Sightmark Sure Shot Reflex Sight Black ). I didn't want to drill the hole for it so I used some M3 double sided tape for the rail and install the reddot. To me it looked funny and was harder for me to aim. So I was glad that I didnt drill anyhole to my receiver.

I guess it is all personal preference.

Thanks for the responses. I am just going to use it for HD...no bird season for me.

The JIC doesn't have a buttstock... so the question is: How would you hold a shotgun like that up to your face to use the optic? Assuming you could, I hope you have really strong cheekbones if you tried to fire it. ;-)

I plan on trying a red dot site on my benelli some day. Simply because I'm left eye dominant and would like to give it a try.

What's a good choice for "better irons"?

I think you'd better go shoot the thing first. Then go buy a real stock for it. Once you can aim it properly then you'll be in a position to evaluate sight options. For HD a bead is what you want.

Shotgun = Point then shoot = destroy. I think you would be better off spending your money on more ammo!
