How many rounds in a short time (couple of minutes) does it take to make the barrel so hot that it'll hurt to touch for just a second?

It seems to me that you would have to be firing a LOT in a /HDbattle scenario to make a barrel that hot, but I have no experience with shotguns and shooting that much.

Depends on use. Like the guys say strictly HD get the 59. if youneed a versatile one for skeet or trap or hunting and HD get the 500. I doubt youll be in such a life and death scenario where a 590 will do something the 500 wont

Good point Rob. OP why not tell us why you want a shotgun.

          Only 2 or 3.

well the main reason is hd so im leaning towards the 590. Also, the thought of being able to kabob any unlucky intuders on a bayonet and THEN blow them away just makes me feel all fuzzy inside.

Ha ha ha......nothing says you broke into the wrong house at 0300 in the morning better than a 12 gauge with 9 rounds of 00 Buck and a fixed bayonet:

Either the 590 or 500 would do. It just depends on what you want to pay. I know the 500 can be had for less "Big 5 Special" $300? I know the 590A1 is a little bit more. If you don't mind paying a bit more get the 590A1. If you want to save some money wait for the Big 5 Special. OR you can always check out the for sale ads here on Calguns. Bootcamp is selling some shotguns in NorCal if that's where you are.

590 all the way. I have one and love it. You would't regret it.

If you're gonna go Mossberg and plan to get the 8-shot 500, I would pretty much 100% of the time recommend you just go up to the 590 model if you can fit it in your budget. I personally could not fit it into my budget and did not mind getting an 8-shot at the great sale price of 279, so I went with that. Only other time I wouldn't recommend simply going up to the 590 is if you want to later, down the road change out barrels for different lengths/chokes (i.e. if you want to do different hunting, trap/skeet, etc.). In that case the 6-shot 500 is your best choice for out of the box barrel swapping, but the 8-shot is fine if you want a security configuration and don't mind buying a 6-shot magazine down the road later to swap barrels.

Do like I did... get both!

Seriously, if this is your first shotgun, you want to learn the many different ways it can be shot/used. I love my 590, but I'd go with the 500 Big 5 combo. You have a capable HD weapon, and 20 seconds later you have a capable trap/skeet/waterfowling weapon with adjustable chokes.
I also find the 590 heavier than the 500...

I shoot clays with my 500a ( security 7+1 ) just fine. I was going to get the 590 but the price difference wasn't worth it to me. I'm very happy with my purchase. 279 before fees & tax.

Between the 500 and the 590 my vote's for the 590. Throw the 590A1 into the mix and here's my vote:

                          Mossberg 590A1 18.5"

Couldn't say no to the hearty construction and the parkerized finish. It's a little more than the 590 but I felt the extra money was an investment into a firearm I would have and use for a long time.

I'm not a fan of plastic parts, go with the 590. Theres a reason the police use the 590 and not the 500.

Uhmm just to set the record straight a bit.

500 vs. 590 vs. 590A1 - Is what appears to be - under discussion.

590A1 - was used by the US Military most notably the Navy en-mass; the army was second. This weapon passed the 3443G requirements by switching to a metal (aluminum) trigger guard - safety was done at the same time. The heavy barrel was added at the Navy's request.

590 - more or less a hybrid, this is generally a 500 with some 590A1 features, most notably the open ended magazine tube which allows for a much easier cleaning when needed. Typically 8+1 capacity is possible due to the 20" barrel.

500 - closed end magazine tube typically 5+1 capacity, allows for quick change of barrels, this is what is commonly called the combo - coming with a 18.5" cylinder bore for home defense, and a 28" vent ribbed improved choke for birds/clays/etc..

                              590A1 - Model# 51663
                              590 - Model#50645 - is a typical Big5 item
                              500 - Model #50452 - is the 18.5" 5+1; Big5 has these in combos w/18.5" and 28" VR barrels
Also be aware over the years; Mossberg had a number of requests for 590A1's with 5+1 magazines and shorter barrels from various US Military divisions. So you can find items for sale today, that say 500 - and have 590A1 parts.

Example, I ordered a 500 cruiser, thinking I could re-use my other 500 barrels - and got this instead. Which has the heavy barrel (w/breaching muzzle) and the 590A1 style clean-out tube with the open barrel nut.

                              500 Model #54125
Not being one to ever return a gun in my possession... I ordered a 2nd Mossberg 500 Cruiser this time getting this. That had the proper closed barrel nut; allowing me to interchange barrels with my other Mossberg 500.

                              500 Model #50450
So... now I have 3 Mossbergs... oh well.

BTW - I've never heard of any police units standardizing on the Mossberg - from what I ever knew on the subject all police forces used the Remington 870. Which is why you always see the Mossberg vs. Remington threads (as they typically end up being Military vs. LEO discussions).

Anyway - personal opinion... First shotgun? The Mossberg 500 Combo's from Big5.
