      Moss 500

I still think the Big 5 Mossberg 500 combo deal is hard to beat. Two barrel combo for under $300 bucks!

Or the 20" Persuader (they call it Security) model they sell. Both are practically the same, but the 500 is probably a bit cheaper so I'd recommend that one.

          Yes. It is worth it.

The 590 holds more shells, has a better trigger (more parts are metal instead of plastic) and is easier to take apart and clean.

One step up from that is the 590A1, all metal parts.

My 590A1 was ~500 after tax and transfer (but pre-Obama being elected...)

Oh, so the 590 that Big 5 sells, or anyone sells is different from the 590A1?

Do you know the specific defferences? I always knew the 500 was diff from the 590 but didn't know there were variances in the A1 designation as well.

Well at least it's not a 870 vs. 500/590 thread!

Yes the 590 is worth the difference or even if you can find a 500ATP.

My opinion is it depends on the configuration you want. I like the 590 because I wanted the parkerized finish and the 8+1 capacity. If you'd rather have a shorter, lighter gun I don't see much advantage of the shorter 590A1 models over the cheaper 500. People ooh and aah about the metal trigger guard and safety of the 590A1 but I've yet to see mention of a plastic one that broke.

If there's a 500 model that has the features you're looking for I see no downside to saving yourself $100.

For a dual purpose set up the Model 500 combo is hard to beat. For strictly HD use, I would go with the 590 or the 590A1.

The A1's have a thicker, heavier barrel, all metal trigger group and safety. As far as I know, the A1 versions only come the parkerized or Marinecote finish, whereas the standard 590's come in Blued, Matte blued, or Marinecote finishes.

The standard 590 can be had with a factory heat shield, but on the A1 versions the heat shields have to be modified to fit. I think there is a company that offers a heat shield for the A1, but it is pretty pricey...

I was about to buy a 590 from Big 5 when I got a deal on a used 590A1, so I got that one instead.....

mic214 has some good input here. If it's only for HD or SHTF use, go with the 590. You can also put an evil bayonet on it so an evil bad guy can run into it .

However, the model 500 combo has a vastly wider selection of after market barrels for different uses such as rifled slug barrels, barrels with a rail, barrels with different lengths, etc. You already have 2 barrels to begin with.

                        This!

If you are looking for a HD gun only, look at the 590. But, if you want a good, all around shotgun for hunting, begining trap shooting and HD, get a 500. The 500 is far more versatile unless you just want to be a tacticool mall ninja.

Tacticool only, unless you will be doing serious bayonet work with it.

The 500 Combos are one of the best deals around for a do-it-all shotgun.

Depends. I was firmly gripping the rack on mine and a few times my thumb grazed the barrel during firing, gave it a slight singe. If you have big hands like me a heat shield might not be a bad idea.
