Pistol grips on shotguns will lead to wrist fatigue. I was an LEO FA instructor for a number of years in CO and we would allow individual officers to qualify with their personal 870's, Many would bring out pistol griped stocks on their 870 and by noon we would be swapping them for standard stocks. Our training included 300+ rounds by the end on the day. Lots of very sore wrists when pistol grips were used. Our SWATteam used 12 3/4" and 14" standard stocked 870's and loved then in tight quraters.

I don't think a jury would sympathise with shooting an assailant 300+ times. I was speaking in terms of use as a HD tool.

As I talk about on my web site the design of any shotgun must be based on the intended use of the weapon. I go into this in detail on the "design your weapon" link of my web site. Yes, there can be an all around shotgun but it is give and take, where when building for an a specific use you can maximize the accessories to fit the need. With this said, most all the conflicts and opinions about accessories become mute. You decide what works best for you. I will say this, short is better in most all situations and the pistol grip shortens the weapon but allows you to keep the 18.5 barrel and mag tube extension that the SBS denies you and that is a big plus. Also, these weapons are for up close and personal and like the one post said, you can be dead on with a pistol grip only stock with practice.

            Grip vs Stock

            Best of both worlds perhaps.

My 870 has one of those relatively cheap Advanced Technologies top folding stocks on it. It sits in its resting spot folded and can easily be fired that way or, if time allows, can be flipped open and used as normal. It's not the most comfortable to shoot with your face on the plastic, but it's an HD gun, so that's the least of my worries.

Btw, both my wife and I agree that it's actually more comfortable to shoot with the stocked folded up and then shot from the hip than from the shoulder(yes, even with buck shot). Go figure.

Shooting the 870 this way is WAY more comfy that my tiny little Ithaca M87 which is a pistol grip only. That thing definitely lets you know it's going off!

I have the Remington OEM Factory Folding Stock on mine. You need to practice with it. Amongst my friends, only few of us can handle it.

The pistol grip will beat the hell out of your wrist because that where all the torque will happen. The energy from the shotgun blast will travel back to your shoulder (unfolded stock) and into your hand (pistol grip). If you could find someone near you who has it set up this way, try it out, then you'll understand.

if you shoot that ATI stock unfolded your cheek rests on top of the rail it is very very uncomfortable to shoot at the range..in a HD situation its nice for getting around hallways but for a day at the range its not very good...look into a knox stock with the recoil reducer...
I dont shoot 870's or mossy 500's anymore they are great guns but I prefer my winchester super x2 (FN SLP)

Looks like one of the 14" AOW Remingtons that summitgunbroker had for sale a while back. Just couldn't get my $#it NFA trust together fast enough before they were gone.

Pistol Grips on a shotgun for home defense?

                              NO!

                              Not ever!

Forget "they look cool" & "everybody else likes 'em!"

                              Let's look at the facts.

Close quarters, but it is in your home. You know the surroundings. Now you are searching for the bump in the night, shotgun at the ready. Should you encounter an intruder who reaches out from behind a corner and grabs the barrel of the shotgun, he has the leverage if you are holding on to a pistol grip he can rock it downward toward the ground as he moves toward you with a free hand (possibly armed) while both of your hands are trying to fight and point the barrel back upwards, you have just been hit or stabbed. If he so choose he grabs the barrel and pushes it upward and again you lose the leverage while he works on your gut with his free hand or with knife/club/whatever.

BUT, if you have a nice solid stock and the same intruder grabs the barrel and forces it downward, use his pressure downward and rotate the shotguns stock around to bring with quick action the stock across the face/jaw, which applied correctly will likely make him let go. But don't stop there, he is off balance dazed after the shot to the face and your rifle is now in the perfect position to come back hard with a butt stock smash to the face, more than likely driving him to the ground and swiveling your shotgun around into the ready position. If you have not yet, now is a great time to rack it with the barrel pointed at the bleeding intruder. Less than lethal and will most likely will require nothing more than a 911 call for someone to come pick him up.

If the intruder chose to grab the barrel and lift you simply change the "roundhouse" stock strike to an "uppercut" and bring the rifle stock upward and strike for the chin. If you miss and catch him hard in the chest, throat or nose, it is still just as effective. Again follow with the butt smash downward as the follow through and end up pointing and racking the shotgun at the attacker laying on your floor.

Throw the "cool" pistol grips in the trash!

Or just save them if you ever decide to sell the shotgun since people will eat up the looks of a pistol grip. LMAO!

RE: Lasers, flashlights and holders of extra shells all over the shotgun.

You know your way around YOUR dark house better than the intruder.

Why light the room up for him to see and worse light yourself up for him to know you are coming?

Why stick a laser which only hits the back wall of any room and draws your attention to it, when unless the bad guy is laying flat against the back wall, it is not where you need your attention to be?

And again, why alert him you are coming?

Lastly, if you can't hit they guy in a desperate situation, who is probably under 15 yards away with 7 rounds or less, the laser and all that extra weight (all this stuff adds up and is not light and maneuverable) of the speedstock and the receiver shell holder isn't likely going to help you one bit.

I guess some of you are hoping if it "looks bad @**" enough, that he will just give up.
