Pistol grip for Remington 870 Express?

I'm considering a pistol grip for my Remington 870 Express. Good idea? Bad? What do you think?

When you say pistol grip do you mean a pistol grip only, or do you mean a full stock with a pistol grip.

If you're talking about a pistol grip only shotgun, I would advise against it. They are difficult to aim, and your hand/wrist takes a beating. If you want a pistol grip on your shotgun I would go with a stock that has a pistol grip combined with the full stock (i.e. Knoxx or SpeedFeed just to name a few). Having a full stock on the shotgun allows you to aim much better, and the full stock allows your shoulder to absorb the recoil (which will be much more comfortable) vs your hand/wrist being beaten up.

However, if you are sure you want a pistol grip only shotgun I would look at the Knoxx breachers grip (i think that's what its called) which dampens the recoil substantially.

I had a pistol grip on my 870 express as well for a while, kept it by my beside. It was cool for a few months, then I got tired of it and switched back to the original stock.

Keep in mind that most ranges will not let you shoot with a pistol grip only set up. They require a buttstock and "aiming." Now it isn't hard to switch out the stock/ grip, but after a number of times it gets old. Additionally, you should train in the set up you plan to keep it in.

I agree with a past post that is tough on the hand/ wrist after a handful of buckshot rounds. It is nice and compact though, and it does look cool.

I've had Pachmayr Vindicator Grips on my 870 for 20 years. Love'em! Takes a little practice but you can hit what you're shooting at 15 yds. or so. Makes it real convenient in tight quarters. Not for everyone but works for me.

The Knoxx breecher grip does in fact reduce felt recoil and better yet it helps with muzzel flip. I build guns with it and have shot it many times as I test fire all my custom builds. There is a reply above that you saw the knoxx grip but it was for right hand only? I think you are confused. Any SpecOps, Breecher, Comp stock does not come right hand only. They are stocks and work on right or left hand weapons. If you looked at the breecher grip and saw a QD on the left side, well, that can be moved to the right side also, just screw it out and move it.

Pistol grip is good for corridor entry or tight buildings.

Pretty much useless for anything else.

I think you miss another issue with the pistol grip only. Compact. I have several of my custom builds that were bought by brush pilots in Alaska and are flying around in thier with an AI&P Tactical shotgun in the cabin. Several also by guides who wanted a compact shotgun for their packs and a few by over the road truck drivers. These left the shop with pistol grip only rear stock. Why, Compact and for close up use. They have their place.

My buddy got me a Speedfeed Stock and it has been the best feeling pistol grip I have used. It does not have a retractable or collapsing stock.

I have tried quite a few different stocks, and personally I have happily settled down with the Hogue 12" L.O.P. buttstock.

It is just about 6" longer than a pistol grip only stock, yet it provides full buttstock usability and is rather lightweight.

It has a good quality soft rubber finish, and it came with a decent recoil pad. It can easily add a 5-round buttstock-style shotshell carrier, and has a sling swivel stud.

To me it is the best of both worlds, and I am very happy about it.

                      Regards,

Sounds like APPI is saying if you want a shotgun to lean against the wall or hole up someplace then get the pistol grip only. If you want to shoot it then you need a stock.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

This knox cop stock with adjustable stock also has recoil reduction 50%.

I also have a Knoxx SpecOps™ Adjustable Stock with Recoil Suppression. They claim upto 95% recoil reduction but realistically like JT said its about 50-60%. I actually have one on my Remy & Moss.

I found the pistol grip to be more comfortable to shoot than with a stock. They arent hard to aim either if you get used to it.
