^ I have a decent collection of guns. Only 2 have ever had rust issues. My 870 rusted just sitting there and a touch on the bolt job of a 700. It’s just the metallurgy/coating sometimes. Not user error or lack of care. Some guns are just super prone to rust.

      Was it sn 870 Express?
870 Express barrels are known to be rust magnets.
The finish on those barrels was terrible.

He said wingmaster but yes the express is known for rust. Even a wingmaster can have a bad coating once in a while.

Sorry, I should have used the ^.

I was asking about your 870, was it an 870 Express?

Oh hell yeah it is. But two coats of rattle can and it?s now good to go. I can remember gun counter workers telling me they rusted brand new in box.

Funny. My Express looks great. But I don't hunt with it. I bought it 2nd hand. It's from the era they had that "J" key for the safety. I replaced the safety with a big button and the extractor with Volquartsen.

The Benelli Nova has a mostly plastic frame and stock. Rattle can the barrel, keep the bolt well lubed, and you're pretty well good to go.

I've been hunting over saltwater for years with that set up and have very few rust issues with little more than a post hunt wipedown.

I use frog lube as a rust preventer. It is VERY good at preventing rust! Quick wipe down after a wet hunt and good cleaning and lube between seasons. No issues so far and they live in a humid environment during summer.

I also use froglube on my table saw, reloading dies and other stuff to prevent rust.

Spray paint it. And clean it after water use. I've been doing that for 20 years with the same old Mossberg 500 that was old and beat up when I got it. Works great to this day.

Eezox is pretty good for rust prevention. Just spray it on the gun surface, and gently wipe it dry. It worked magic on my 15+ years old 'Big 5 Special' 870 Express.

To me, the only drawback of Eezox is its strong smell, so spray it in an open area.

I just took my ‘ol 870 Express duck hunting for the first time. I literally watched the thing rust before my eyes. I spent more time cleaning the rust off it than cleaning my ducks. I’m thinking cerakote is the answer.

I used to hunt the salt ponds in SF bay and used Rig gun grease on a Rig rag for total wipe down before hunting.. Used a toothbrush to get the Rig under the vent rib.. Easy off after hunting with Gunscrubber and a clean toothbrush for under the rib..
Ceracote would be better for a lesser value shotgun if you didn?t care about the original finish Im thinking..
                          Cheers..

I used to hunt there as well, with a Remington 870 Express that practically visibly rusted right before your eyes. I always kept a spray can of WD-40 and a rag in the car, and that pretty much took care of everything.

I hunt the salton sea. Alkali soil/mus and super high salinity ate at everything. I would wipe down with aerosol oil and it prevented a lot of rust but not all. Any mud or oil would eat into the bluing on the barrel. Receiver was mossberg marine and it was maintenance free. I keep meaning to do multiple layers of krylon as it worked on my buddy?s 1100.

Ya I learned alot of lessons hunting the salt ponds.. First thing I did when leaving ,, Hit the quarter wash and get the dirt and mud off your truck underneath.. Lots of salt in the dirt and rusting your truck brings no joy ?
                                Cheers ..
