    Trying to make Mossberg fit

Hey guys I'm trying to make my Mossberg 500 fit. With the original stock I have to move my hand off the dropped part of the stock (this was previously called the "pistol grip" but since there's AR-style pistol grips on shotguns now I don't know what it's been updated to) to reach the trigger since the Mossberg trigger is a bit forward on the receiver. The LOP is also too long for when I'm hunting with multiple layers on.

I'm thinking about trying a Magpul SGA but I'm not certain about how the weird contour would feel as I like traditional stocks. Does it feel like a traditional stock or a pistol grip stock? Also I'm using an old Mossberg drop shim and am unsure that would fit with the SGA.

Another option is to try a 13" LOP stock straight from Mossberg. I'm not sure aftermarket recoil pads would fit it though, and I want to replace it because Mossberg recoil pads seem to be hard as rocks after a short time.

My last option I'm considering is just getting a shotgun that fits better out of the box. The Winchester SXP fits me pretty well, has an amazing recoil pad and a nice stepped rib so I wouldn't need to bother shimming. But the Mossberg was used and abused by the last owner and I don't really take care of it, and any failure in the field with mud getting in the action has been fixable just by racking the slide harder. The SXP seems a bit hit or miss in terms of quality and a bit more sensitive in action. It's about $400 out the door with a rebate, vs dropping $150 on an SGA and recoil pad. Is it worth it to try to make it fit?

Buy the magpul stock on Amazon. Mount it. If it doesn’t feel good just return it.

I suspect you'd be best served with a "youth" stock (if they have one for the 12g (?). I suspect they reduce the reach from the grip to the trigger in scale with the length of pull. Or just get bigger hands.

While a bit more investment, a recoil pad can be fitted to anything.

Hogue makes a "bantom" stock that I believe is like 12" LOP.

That's what the 13" option would be. They advertise easier trigger reach. My fingers are a bit short but I don't have this problem on any other shotgun!

I've seen target guys "build-up" the pistol grip with some type of hardening "clay". Not exactly aesthetic, but........

TMK, they keep the trigger reach on par with factory.

The shortness is for wearing armor and a "breaching/advancing" stance.

                    Just get a different gun!

The magpul stocks are heavy and expensive.

The hogue short stocks have a rubber coating that deteriorates and gets sticky, super annoying.

I like your last idea, different gun!

Also, consider 20 ga and semi auto. Mossberg has a real sweet shooting 20 ga semi auto that comes with short stock.

The answer is always buy another gun.

Mossberg SA20 with bantam stock, these guns have become famously reliable.

Instead of spending time & money to MMM (Mickey Mouse a Mossberg), follow your own advice and get a shotgun that fits you out of the box.

I upgraded my 500's. Did I spend a few bucks? Yes, but now they fit me. Also, the one w/the pistol grip has a Kynshot buffer and I can shoot slugs all day w/o feeling it the next day.
