Anyone have a bolt action .410 shotgun made by BSA in the early part of the 20th century? They look like they were made from old Lee Enfield actions after WW1, sold as "everybody's gun or the 'garden gun'.

If I remember right I shot one at scout camp. 22 receiver with a 410 barrel to allow the bird shot to spread. We shot plastic snap together discs resembling clay pigeons.Only slaves don't need guns

no luck on gunbroker search other than some old catalogs..
what are you after? information from someone that has one? want to buy one? set on that particular model?
I have three Mossberg model 183 fixed mag and a Stevens 59A tube feeder which are all .410
I really enjoy shooting them.. .410 is a great shell but unfortunately very expensive
top one in this pic is a 185 20ga, middle two 183 .410, and bottom is 59A .410

my grandpa's 183 .410 I grew up shooting, that's my son with it couple years ago at 7yo

I started out with nothing - and I still have most of itComment

indeed there are, and a few different types.. commonly called 'snake shot' or similar.. couple of different shot size options..
not sure how common or easy to find nowadays or what they probably cost
I shot a lot of them growing up.. one word of caution, they may not cycle a semi-auto, they wouldn't in my Ruger 10/22.. better suited for bolt/lever rifle but work best out of a revolver

To answer an earlier question. what I'm ideally wanting to do is find a usable one of them to add to my stable. I have one of the No.1 models with the Lee Enfield cocking piece and safety but it doesn't extract at all well as the chamber is pretty rough and the extractor is 100+ years old and a bit worn.
Ideally I want to find one the the "Model De Lux" items with the safety in the buttstock wrist.
I will add that I am quite taken by those Mossbergs pictured above. How many rounds does the magazine hold - three?Attached FilesComment

you could try some of the vintage parts houses like numrich to see if you can find parts you need..
Shop BSA firearm parts and accessories. Find replacement components for Birmingham Small Arms sporting rifles, military training rifles, and historic firearm platforms.
or possibly find a good old fashioned gunsmith (not a part swapper) to see if someone could make repairs to what you have..
as far as the mossberg 18X series, they were extremely popular in the post war era and still a decent number of them out there available..
the 183 .410 hold 2 down, 1 in to meet hunting capacity regs.. seems though if I recall I could squeeze an extra one down but don't quote me on that..
I haven't used one on a regular basis in 40 years and my boy single loads for target practice and hasn't hunted with one yet..
one of these winters I'd like to take him rabbit hunting back on the farm but may be another couple years after I retire and we move back there for good..
not sure where you're located but if you're anywhere near the oc you're welcome to take one for a test drive, just send me a pm..
good luck with your search!I started out with nothing - and I still have most of itComment

I had a somewhat similar ejecting problem with my great uncle's Iver Johnson 32ga single shot break open shotgun.
When I first got it many years ago it came with a box or two of paper cased shells which all ejected fine. After doing a lot of searching around (before home computers were available) I found a case of modern Fiocchi 32ga plastic cased shells and the ejection problems started up. The spent plastic cased shell would not budge so I carried a long wooden dowel around and used it as a ramrod. It turned out to be a real PITA procedure so back in the safe it went.
Several years passed by and just before last year's dove opener I got to thinking again about the 32ga ejection problems so I tried an experiment. I loaded an unfired plastic shell and it ejected perfectly. Next, I took four plastic shells over to my grinder and carefully ground off four different depths of the round plastic crimps. Took them and the shotgun on my dove trip and during that time I shot all four of those shells. The first two lightly ground down shells after being fired wouldn't eject but the last two that were ground down deeper and after being fired popped out smartly. The expanded plastic crimp after being fired was the culprit all along.Comment

nickel plate - if you're up for it (or the next time you do it), can you take a shell or two, repeat your "custom grind" and post before and after pictures?
I can post the pictures, if that helps.
