your location would help us steer u to an lgs. I thought I saw a 590A1 (or possibly a 590 with similar features) at Discount Gun Mart on Morena Blvd in San Diego. In regards, to the barrel and magazine being flush, that is purely aesthetics and I think your best bet would be to go with the 20” version. I do remember seeing a model 590 with 18.5” barrel with a magazine extension that made the two flush a couple years ago at that shame shop.sigpic

Buying a Shotgun is only the start. Then you've got to learn how to use it.
You can't put a mag extension on an 18" Mberg 500. The lug that secures the barrel in position is attached to barrel and you can't move it. If you want the gun to have the mag tube and barrel the same length you have to buy the 20" gun. And get one with Rifle Sights as you will need them.

Then find a Shooting School or Instructor to teach you how to run the gun. There is a lot to it and you need to learn it all to be competent with the weapon. It will take you multiple trips thru the course to absorb all the techniques. Then you will need to practice them a lot to become proficient with them.
You need to learn how to operate the gun using the Cheapest Birdshot you can find. Walmart used to be the hot tip. When you need Buckshot or Slugs get Federal Low Recoil ammo. There is no need to use High Based ammo for anything "YOU" will ever do with the gun. If you were boarding ships for a living then maybe some hotter ammo would be useful. Absorbing Recoil is not going to make you a bigger man. It will only make you not want to pull the trigger.

For the Mossberg 590/590A1 shotguns, there are magazine tube extensions in the +1 or +2 lengths.
With the latest 18.5" 590A1 guns, the magazine tube was lengthened by 1-round compared to earlier 18.5" 590A1 models. I believe the latest models will look about right to you with a 1-round extension, but I don't have a photo to show as I don't have either the latest 590A1 or the extension. Perhaps somebody can do an internet search to find such a photo.
Here's a model which I'm also not seeing present in various gun shops, either, as I'd prefer the ghost ring sight version.

Sorry I was thinking of the M500's which have a different mag tube with a plug in the end that the barrel screw threads into. No Extensions for those models.
My 18" M500 gun is 5+1 and the 20" M500 gun is 7+1. I can ACTUALLY Port Load the gun so only having 6 or 8 rounds on board is not that big a handicap for me.
