got myself a 1301 tactical for my birthday late last month. Been running around town buying up all the quality 00 buckshot defensive loads I can find like giddy school girl. Have not found any Federal Flite Control yet. That stuff is unobtanium. I have bought Hornady TAP (three varieties), Hornady Critical Defense, Hornady Black, and a bunch of cheaper, non-buffered, non-plated, non-flight control wad stuff just to practice with. What 00 buckshot are you all using for home defense purposes?

Federal Low Recoil Buckshot and Slugs are all you need for 99% of the shooting you will do with that gun!
If you need to Hunt Polar Bears or Stop Pick Up Trucks then look into Brenneke Slugs.
For everything else Low Recoil <1300 fps is the answer. You don't need to shoot buckshot at anything you don't intend to kill. You use the cheapest Birdshot you can find to practice.
Absorbing more recoil doesn't make you a Bigger Man! It just makes you not want to pull the trigger. Give yourself a break !!!

As long as the low recoil loads cycle, they'll be fine. That being said, as an amateur waterfowl hunter, I've shot 3" goose loads (1 1/4 oz @ 1500 fps) with no problem. You don't really feel it in the moment, especially with a gas auto and a jacket on. Another thing I've found is that shouldering the shotgun properly helps reduce felt recoil.Comment

Another vote for reduced recoil buckshot and slugs---you can always keep a few boxes of the full-shout stuff if needed---like say a bear coming thru your kitchen...! I've made efforts over the years to reduce the amount of kick as I get older---and I'm already there... My 870s are fitted with mercury recoil reducers in the stock, the best recoil pads available and reduced recoil ammo---makes a noticeable difference...Comment

I have low recoil/light load for my pump. If your 1301 cycles low FPS shells, go for it. But be sure.
Semi-auto weapons can be FPS sensitive. My brother thought his semi-auto shotgun was dirty, spring worn, etc. but it was light loads were not cycling.Sometimes a gun is just a gun.Comment

Any buck that your gun cycles will be good for real/imaginary self defense scenarios.
I have a cornucopia of different brands of buck ammo. Low recoil/full power/3"mag as well as Foster slug loads.
OP should not worry about which ammo to use for repelling boarders. IMO
Keep it topped off and put a good light on it then go shoot the crap out of it.Comment

I love my 1301 Tactical, it's very soft shooting.
I have not tried anything low recoil to my knowledge, but I've used birdshot for over 200 rounds and never had a cycling issue."A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

I'm partial to the Winchester Military Grade Buckshot whenever I can find it. It's been a few years since I've seen any available though.

Federal LE Tactical w/Flite Control...8 Pellet, full power.
Note that the 9 pellet rounds are ever so slightly longer than the 8 pellet shells. This makes a difference in capacity in my m4 but not in my 870. YMMV.
Also, if you go with the reduced recoil version, make certain your gun will cycle it reliably. Some semi-autos struggle with reduced recoil rounds."Kestryll I wanna lick your doughnut."

LE127, full power w/flight control in the semi autos
LE132 and LE133 in the pumps
If I ever run out of flight control I have the buck kicker choke for my 1301 which gives flight control type groups from any buckshot
