    Kel-Tec KSG

Up-grading from my 870 and buying a KSG basic set up, I'm a old gun shooter for the most part (the firearms not me but getting there lol) so i'm really not versed with firearm rail systems, a good basic sight and holder for a light is what I hope someone can help me with that knows this firearm.

    Cheers

The KSG is NOT an upgrade from an 870! They have their own list of issues.

I would not consider the KSG as an upgrade to the 870 but if you want it, go for it! Alternatively, you could always reconfigure your 870 if it doesn’t suit your needs. There are a lot of aftermarket parts for the 870.

I have a shooting buddy who loves his KSG and has it as an HD weapon. Unfortunately, I don’t believe he has a light on it so I can’t help with your original question.

I just got one and ordered a flashlight and a green laser for it.

It doesn't have the higher picatinny rail apparatus - so if I put a red dot on the picatinny which is just on the barrel - I was told I would beat the hell out of my cheek.

I have read the negative comments about it, but I just like the design.

I also like my Remington 870 shotguns (got two), but do have AR-15 rifles, too, with similar-to-KSG full top rails. I've been content with not buying a KSG bullpup shotgun. "Upgrade" is also not a word I'd use when comparing an 870 to one of the KSG models. The KSG guns are different, but not necessarily better.

Sights. There are the backup-iron-sights (aka BUIS) and there are various optics. Some folks will put both onto their firearms. Here are two models/brands to be more specific, but are only example of many out there:

          Magpul rear: https://magpul.com/mbus-sight-rear.h...obal_color=118

          Magpul front: https://magpul.com/mbus-sight-front....obal_color=118

Trijicon MRO, comes in red or green dots; four product model lines: https://www.trijicon.com/products/su...y/trijicon-mro

Forgot to add the light types.
As the KSG will have a rail or two, a simple clamp-on light like a Streamlight TLR-1HL would be fine.

Streamlight has several other variations and models which may be bought & used instead.

The Kel-Tec KSG is a niche shotgun and not an upgrade from the Remington 870.

It is a niche shotgun and for me the niche is interior home defense.
^Short overall length with large ammo capacity.

There are better shotguns for other tasks and I would utilize one of those shotguns if the scenario was something other than interior home defense.

The KSG is not my go to HD shotgun, I use semi autos for that. I don't even keep it tube loaded like I do the Rem 870 and the Win 12. But I do have one. I have a Streamlight TLR-4 on a 45 degree offset on the pump rail, just forward and to the right of the Magpul vertical grip. I can activate the light with my knuckle while I am gripping the RVG.

I have Magpul MBUS sights with a XS Big Dot tritium post on the front. I also drilled and threaded the front MBUS to take a fiber shotgun bead, as a backup for when both the sights are folded down when I want to use open sights, and it is just fine for close work. The MBUS sights are more for slug use at some distance.

The big plus of the KSG is size and capacity. But it gets real heavy with a full load and you really have to stroke it hard. I also would not want to deal with any type of malfunction since the works are sort of buried up in the stock. I would probably not replace a 870 with one, but perhaps it would be OK as a backup.

I really enjoy the ksg but your copy needs to be vetted. Once they run they work well, but fiddling may or may not be needed.

Had 4 at one time. 2 were perfect. 2 had to go back to keltec

Guy's when I said up-grade I meant design is all as it looks fantastic, my HD is a 1911, anything beyond that I have a 8mm FN 49.

I would be very careful about a vertical foregrip. If it breaks, it can leave your hand in front of the muzzle when you pull the trigger. That is a bad thing.

No one has broken a KSG rail with Magpul VFG yet. The very, very few instances of any problems were with cheap VFG and also people using the VFG as a torque stop while wrenching on the barrel nut.

More people have shot themselves with Glocks and just about every other handgun ever made than with a VFG failing on a KSG.

Your hand could just as easily slip forward without using a VFG. That's just the perils of a pump bullpup shotgun where the pump slide end is an inch from the muzzle.

Almost all of those incidents involved ProMag made VFG or Chinese made knockoff VFG.

The one I have personnel witnessed, VFG breaking off KSG during pump with no injuries to shooter, it was a Chinese knockoff of a Magpul VFG that was bought online from an airsoft vendor.

I have the Kel-Tec KSG Carry Handle on mine. It is simple, has a built-in HIVIZ Litepiple fiber optic sight, and has a few M-LOK slots to mount light.

It is currently on-sale for $19.95 at the Key-Tec website. It is a good deal, imo.

A good RDS is the best solution for any HD shotgun. As for a light mount find something that is accessible with a slight deviation to your normal support grip. For lights on shotguns a pressure pad activated light is best. A push/hold momentary flashlight will tear up your thumb using birdshot. IMHO a real weapons rated LED flashlight with a spring in the front as well as one in the back will keep your batteries from bashing into the lamp module and rendering your light in operable. SureFire has always been my go to followed by StreamLight. A SureFire 600 Lumen G2X Tactical with a XM07 is a hard combo to beat for the money @ 125.00-150.00

A upgrade for your 870 would be buying a SureFire fore grip light and not replacing it with a KSG.
