Fastest method for reloading?

The big rub in Quad Loading versus Port Loading on a Pump Gun is that in order to Quad Load you must take the gun off your shoulder and turn it upside down which is a bunch of wasted motion. I port load with the gun on my shoulder on target ready to fire as soon as I close the slide. This simple technique negates the advantage of Quad Loading on a Pump Gun.

If you are port loading in a stage, you have screwed up big time in your stage planning. Shotgun stages are about trying to get your shotgun fully loaded while you are moving between shooting positions.

I go just about every month but the guys who are setting up the courses are not shotgun guys they are Pistol/Rifle guys. They say they can't afford to shoot a box of shot shells that will cost them $10, but can burn up 2-3 boxes of 9MMs at the same shoot as well as another box or so of .223!

A typical shotgun stage has about 20 rounds of pistol up front, and then 10 Clays in a line to shoot with your shotgun and then 15-20 more pistol after that to finish.

IN that case their shotguns have 10round+ magazines and if I show up with my 20" M500 that holds 8 I only have to port load 2 shells to complete the stage. I can usually run that portion of the stage in 15 seconds with 2 port loads. and if I use my 18" M500 6 shot then 17 seconds with 4 port loads.

Even if I take my A5 it still only holds 8 and I still have to speed load 2 more.

There is no real movement in the shotgun stage as you can shoot all 10 targets from the same place easier than moving.

The problem is I can't beat a Benelli with a 10 round mag or spray and pray pistol shooters or spray and pray rifle shooters who don't get penalized for misses.

At the last one I went to they had two courses with Rifle Shotgun and Pistol stages side by side, and you shot against another guy.

The shotgun stage was 7 birds in a line, but you could only have 3 rounds in the gun to start. They picked up their guns and quad loaded 4 more and then just went bang bang bang. I had to port load four rounds as there was not time to load the magazine. I shot that part in 16 seconds, everyone of them was less than 10! If they had to single load I would have beaten everyone of them by 30 seconds as they all fumbled big time. But the stage was geared to them .

They were supposed to do something similar last weekend but when I got there it was back to pistol / shotgun stage with 10 in a row and then more pistol to finish that stage.

I turned around, got my money back,,, and left!

I don't shoot to lose and especially when I have no chance of winning from the get go.

Nobody is going to use a Speed Loader like Jerry's on and HD gun.

When you finally get the technique down you should be able to fire one shot every 1-2 seconds for as long as you have ammo .

Had a buddy who said he was going to learn how to quad load for a tactical shotgun class a bunch of us took a month or so ago. Showed up for the class and buddy couldn't even consistently index a shell properly and port load worth a darn, let alone quad load!

I practiced a little at home before class indexing shells off my side saddle, out of a dump pouch, out of a pants pocket and off a belt-mounted shell carrier and also practiced port loading and was noticeably faster than everyone else I'm the class.

Some guy here on Calguns gave me some tips and pointers with pictures, etc. It really helped.

Now if I could only remember who that member was. I'd like to thank him!

If you have to reload more than 1 round, you shouldn't be port loading. You are still faster to grab 4 off the caddy. It takes around 2-3 seconds to grab 4 and feed it into the mag tube one at a time. Even back in the days with running side saddles, I would yank two at a time to feed the mag tube.

How do you hold 4 shells in your left hand and feed them into the mag tube?
I can do 2, but my thumb is not long enough to cover 4 shells and control them enough to feed them into the tube.

Are you doing that motion like the Quad Loading Maneuver with the gun upside down, except just pushing one in at a time? You still have to have your thumb free to push the rounds home?

Please describe how you do this?..

I can port load and fire 4 shots in @5-7 seconds,,, so can you beat that with a Pump Gun? Keep in mind,,, that after you load the magazine you still have to fire all the rounds?

Keith used to use this method. He is VERY fast with it. This video shows how to do it. Start about half way through the video.

No one does this anymore because that was what was used 10 years ago. People have moved on to quad loading since then.

I watched this one before my Computer got Hacked. It is cool the guy can do this. But,,, Is there a video that actually shows up close how he is holding the shells in his hand while stuffing them into the gun? Cuz you can't see anything from across the range.
