I've been to Slugs pretty heavily for the last 3-4 years. I make and load all of mine. There is actually a lot to it and just buying some slugs and expecting them to work perfectly is a real crap shoot.

I have settled on 4-6 different ones for varying purposes. My three main Slugs are the Lyman 525 (Airgun Pellet), the Lee 1 oz. Drive Key Slug and a .662 diameter Round ball.

The Lyman Slug doesn't work very well in a Smoothbore, it really needs to be spinning to get any decent accuracy/. It will work in a rifled barrel as long as you can get the diameter of the payload up close to .730-.735 so the Rifling bites into the wad and transmits rotation.

The Lee Slug works OK in a smoothbore, but once again the fit in the barrel matters. and as long as it is close to slightly under the bore dia. Results will be OK.

The round ball is the easiest to get to work right and pretty much anything will work, but once again getting the dia. over the wad petals close helps, also shooting slugs thru a smooth bore goes best with an IC Choke.

I load all of these in my normal Trap Load of AA hulls with 18-20 gr of Green Dot, a WAA12 wad and then fold crimp the hull closed. I put a 16 ga. 1/8" card below the slug to prevent the wad from being shoved into the void in the rear of the slug and a 1/4" thick Felt Wad below the round balls.

It's not how well you do what you know how to do,,, It is how well you do what you don't know how to do.
