    Finding slugs worth buying...

Been looking for some rifled slugs which are hard to come by right now (as is everything else). All I'm seeing are slugs made by Sterling, BPS and some by Black Aces. Are any of these decent?

      Sabots for rifled barrels.

Foster slugs for smooth bores. NOT rifled. Those vanes are swaged down as it moves thru the bore. They are mashed down and you end up with a smooth cylinder slug.

Brenneke slugs for smooth bores. They have a stabilizer on it's tail. Kinda Fosters with a tail.

My shotguns settled on Fosters in a 2 3/4 and 3" for pie plate accuracy @100yds.
      Federal and Remington.

You buy several types of the ammo and test it in your shotguns to find one that satisfies.

How will you use the slugs?

        Hunting?
        Rifled barrel?

Self defense and smooth bore - cylinder bore or slightly tighter?

What is the max range you will shoot?

For home defense, any slug is overkill and will work just fine.

Many of us switched to light recoil for self defense.

3 1/2" steel Turkey mags are such an overkill for home defense
Even 3" OO mags are overkill

2 3/4" 8 pellet low recoil will deal a massive amount of damage if you hit center of mass

        8 - 380 acp rounds hitting
Interrupting heart, both lungs, diaphragm and other things like
Esophagus and spine for higher shots
        Liver, stomach, pancreas, intestines etc
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
        (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

Not familiar with ANY of those brands. Caveat emptor.

*IIRC there were lots of desperate buyers in 08 ammo shortages and there were lots of off brand and re-branded stuff for sale, people got ripped off or gouged.

Research and see who really makes it and check the source otherwise wave it off and wait for American made stuff that is of a known good repute.

I have had a few folks ask the question: "I know sabot slugs are designed to be used with rifled shotgun barrels, but can they be used effectively with a smooth bore barrel?" That is the question we will try to answer today. First a little terminology education. A solid, single projectile...

I think Sterling and Black Aces are made in Turkey. The other I'm not sure.

i only use federal truball slugs. give em a try.

also, flitecontrol 00 buck shot is 1/2 the spread as winchester standard 00 buck.

Federal Low Recoil Slugs are a good way to go because the recoil from a full house 1-1 1/4 oz. slug at 1600 fps will definitely get your attention! And unless you are shooting Polar Bears not necessary for the vst majority of uses.

1 oz at 12-1300 fps is much easier to control and get good results from.

If you want to load your own just cast up some Lee 1 oz. Slugs and put them into your normal Trap Loads instead of the shot. They work fine for practice and if you needed them in a pinch for HD,,, they'd work for that too.

At HD ranges nothing lives thru a slug. Any Slug. You are shooting a .73 caliber rifle with a 437 gr boolit. This will hurt real bad!!!

I use 3" hevi shot sabots in my rifled barreled SBE2. Works great out to 200 yards. Shot a few does and coyotes with them with great results and ethical kills

In stock (as of this posting): https://www.bonefroggunclub.com/prod...slug-leb127lrs

Another option are Fiocchi low recoil slugs, I've used them in a course before (in stock here as of this posting): https://www.ammosupplywarehouse.com/...ducts_id=20197

I’ve see a lot of slugs available in LGSs lately. 1.00-1.20 a round. Depending on how many you need that’s almost a tolerable price. That’s in San Diego.
