    I have a bead on mine, never thought about changing it! Don't think it matters in HD

      bead or ghost...

      Rifle sight blocks too much for close work

            In a hallway a bead works.
            Outside in the deer slug hinder land I want a rifle ghost ring with a front site.

              Open sights on my 870. Had a 590 with the aperture sight. I prefer open sights on a shotgun.

              BTW, learn the correct terminology people.

              Aperture = "ghost ring"
              Open = "rifle"

                  OP.
                  I shoot trap/skeet/sporting clays with my 870 using a vented rib barrel with a front and mid bead sights.

                  I use a 20" Rifle sighted slug barrel for home defense.
                  I found that when I close my eyes, shoulder the shotgun and open my eyes, the sight picture with the 20" rifle sight is perfect every time.

                  Just a matter of preference.

                  Best regards,
                  870classic.

                    Actually, I have both rifle and bead sights on two older Remington 870 12 gauge shotguns---rifle sights ARE more precise, but FAR SLOWER to use. I consider shotguns as close-range firearms and have come to prefer the plain bead sight for speed of use---if I was using a shotgun for 50+ yard slug shooting, I would probably prefer rifle sights on a choke-tube equipped barrel...

                      This is definitely a matter of Preference, however the more you shoot an HD gun the more you will see the reasoning for Rifle Sights.

                      When you are shooting slugs at 30 yards+ out to 100 yards, you need the sights just like they finally figured out that having a Rear Sight on a musket produced better accuracy. Hence the Kentucky Rifle.

                      Your groups with Sights will be better and that is a simple fact. Do you need them at 10-15 yards,,, Not really, and you might even be able to hit things at 50 yards. But if your gun doesn't shoot to the POA, you have no way to correct it other than holding off. With sights you can adjust them (IE: Sight the gun in) to fix that problem.

                      Also one other thing, If your gun has had the Barrel Vang Comped it will group 00 Buckshot into 7" at 25 yards. That makes Buckshot viable to 50 yards, but you kind of need sights to place the 15" Pattern properly.

                      All 4 of my Tactical Shotguns have Rifle Sights and 3 of them have Big Green FO's on the front which are impossible to miss during the day or even at night with a light on. All you do at close range is put that Green Dot on the target and let fly! Remember you are shooting a shotgun with Buckshot, no need to study the sights. Dot Bang!

                        Sheesh! Grammar nazis on CalGuns now? I think everyone knows what ghost ring and rifle sights mean. And the objective is to communicate.

                          Many home invasions may allow only enough time to grab the shotty and fire from the waist.. Which is fine at such close range.

                            I have rifle sights on mine. A bead requires a good cheek weld. I prefer a more heads up position for home defense.

                              My two shotguns are deployed primarily for home defense. I had a green fiber optic front sight installed on my Stoeger M3K, while my Benelli Super Nova have bead front sight.

                              For my old eyes, I find the green fiber optic more useful. But the bead seems more robust for rough use.
