    Shotgun for BOB

I just purchased an 870HD and I'm thinking that after I do my function test I'll disassemble it and pack it into the false bottom of a bug out bag. Any thoughts? I'm kind of worried about throwing it in the back of the car and breaking something.

get a decent folding stock and a lockable hard case with foam lining to put it in. That way it's always ready to go and easy to transport(legally).

You can not hurt it, but the advise to put a folder on it is great as it greatly reduces the lenght so you don't have to break it down. It you feel you need a shotgun with you will you have the time to assemble it when needed? The folder makes it compact but still ready if needed.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

Put it in a 6 inch PVC pipe along with some ammo. Seal one end with a cap and the other with a threaded cap. Now you have a water proof storage container that can double as a water carrier.

Haha, i can imagine getting searched by the cops having a shotty and a PVC pipe, "God knows what he was going to do, but he has a shotgun and some kind of pipe bomb."

What does a centerfire long gun ( a shot gun in this case ) and a locking case have to do with leagal transort? Long guns do not need any lock & you can lay it on your dashboard and drive around or goose step around the neighborhood if you like .

Agree on folding stock if you need it to pack small, but your receiver assembly will still be your longest piece if the magazine tube is a long one (8 rounds?). You will also lose some shooting comfort with a folder. Will you be removing the mag tube as well?

Would a break-action single or double pack even smaller? I definitely wouldn't worry about the sort of wear your scattergun will encounter riding in a vehicle trunk or cargo area... the temperature changes, moisture, and jostling can't be any worse than what a birding or skeet gun sees in a lifetime of hunting or range trips.

                Mossberg knows what I'm thinking.

                  Mossberg is one step ahead.

That's really neat but I want the 590A1

The thing determining the large diameter of the Mossy JIC's tube is probably the 'height' added by the vertical orientation of the PG. I've said before how much I hate using a pistol-grip-only shotgun, but if that's your route, you might be able to get a smaller package by using one of the more rearward oriented ones kind of like a sawed-off coach gun or "mare's leg" levergun would have.

I still think it'll end up smaller overall if the bbl is taken off and a folding stock put on, but that will dictate a larger diameter tube unless it's a real low-profile folder (top- or bottom-folder, not side), and even then it will have the same height of pistol grip.

The tube gun is a great idea, but even knowing what a BoB is makes me think you're a little more ahead of the game than Mossberg's target audience. I get the idea that carrying around a big pipe like that is pretty conspicuous and not worth the benefits unless you're gonna bury the thing or have it in a wet environment.

I have a bug out bag that's basically just a duffel bag with a frame in the bottom. I was going to put a false bottom in it and store the shotgun there so that I would have something that wouldn't be identified as a gun and I could fly below the radar. The last thing I need in a SHTF situation is to be killed by someone who wants my gun. Too many people think that it'll be like those disaster movies where the man with the gun makes the rules.

If I do need a gun ASAP I'll just grab my AR, which is my go to gun anyways. The shotgun is more of a backup/"wouldn't it be nice" thing. I've got way more trigger time on the AR anyways.

So, back to my original question. If I pack clothes on top of it I shouldn't have to worry about having anything break in transit. This just assumes putting the bag in my trunk and getting the hell out of dodge. Maybe carrying it around for a bit.

Both Federal Law and California Law affect possession and transport of firearms in defined school zones. The requirements are slightly different for each.

However, in general, unless one qualifies for one of the exemptions,

                        * it is illegal to bring a firearm onto a school campus or property, and
                        * it is illegal to have a firearm in a public place within 1000 feet of a k-12 school.

Exceptions include California Concealed Weapons licenses, and transport through school zones unloaded in locked cases.

am I the only one that actually plans on being able to carry my BOB?

Yeah, if you're planning on being able to drive wherever you're going, a shotgun's fine, but in a quake, the roads and bridges may be impassable, so you'll be humping that BOB. Likewise if your car breaks down, runs out of gas, whatever.

Figure a typical pump shotgun weighs, what, 8 lbs? 100 rounds of 12 gauge weighs about 9 lbs. Throw in a case/sling and flashlight, and you're approaching 20 lbs, and that's just with 100 rounds. That doesn't include any grease, cleaning rod, or other maintenance supplies.

100 rounds of .223 weighs about 3 lbs, and 100 rounds of 9mm weighs about 2.7 lbs (not counting spare mags).

A Glock 17 with 4 mags and 200 rounds of ammo weighs about the same as an empty pump gun, is more concealable, and will take care of most social situations. It doesn't have the range of an AR or the power of a 12 gauge, but a BOB is about balancing your needs against what you can carry.

In a bug-out situation, I'd focus on staying off the radar. Looking innocuous means you won't be a target. That being said, I'd rely on a concealed handgun (a G19 in my case) and use it as a last resort. Getting into a gun fight when SHTF will suck even if you come out unscathed because you'll attract alot of unwanted attention. Keep in mind that the objective of my bug-out plan is to make it to a pre-determined bug-out location so I'm not planning on running into the brush for a few weeks.
