    Remington 870 wingmaster barrel question

Ladies and gentlemen, I found a 30 inch full choke 3" mag barrel. My gun is a 2 3/4" model. Can I use the 3" mag barrel on my receiver?

Can use the barrel but can’t shoot 3”

      Just a clarification...
For the standard receivers (2-3/4" shells), the remington 870 barrels with 3" chambers will mount up to the receiver just fine.

And yes, you can shoot a 3" shell in the 3" chambered barrels mounted to the standard 870 receiver. However, you will need to disassemble the barrel from the receiver in order to extract the 3" shell from the barrel. (Chalk this information up to me being stupid in my youth.)

      Best regards,
      870classic.

The length of the shell is after it is fired... the petals fold out.

in the 80's a lot of Remington barrels were cut for 3" shells

the odd are, once fired, they will be too long to eject

        many 2 3/4" gun with a 2 3/4" chamber will load a 3" shell

they get stuck as the petals expand into the forcing cone once fired...

I put a 3" barrel on one of my 2-3/4" Wingmasters, and it works just fine with 2-3/4" shells. I actually checked with Remington tech support before I did it. Just remember to not use 3" shells on that receiver.

Thank you for the replies. I am more interested in the 30" full choke than being able to shoot 3" shells. I have a 28" modified choke. I figure the 30 will give a little more range. No?

The "Full" choke will hold a 30" diameter pattern (usually measured with a 30" diameter circle and all of the pellets from the shell will fit in this circle) at a greater distance than the modified choke.

"Generally speaking" a full choke will hold the 30" pattern for 50 yards, a modified choke will hold the 30" pattern for 40 yards, improved cylinder will hold the 30" pattern for 30 yards and Cylinder/skeet chokes will hold the pattern for 20 yards.

This is a rule of thumb (don't beat me with the stick greater than the thickness of your thumb) and your mileage will vary with your specific gun/shell/choke/etc.

                  Best regards,
                  870classic.

One point , if you compare a 870 Mag and a 870 both open you will see the extractor is .250 longer on the magnum. The 18.5 barrel is 3.0 inch and works fine with 2 3/4 shells.

Depends. Generally you don't want to shoot steel (or the tungsten, TSS, etc.) through a full choke.

NO. All other things being equal, full choke will not give you more range, but it will give you tighter patterns at any given range. The pellets will slow down and fall out of the sky at the same distance from the muzzle, regardless of choke. The full choke just keeps the pellets closer together.
