May the Bridges I burn light the way.

Life Is Not About Waiting For The Storm To Pass - Its About Learning To Dance In The Rain.

Fewer people are killed with all rifles each year (323 in 2011) than with shotguns (356), hammers and clubs (496), and hands and feet (728).

No doubt there are more chocies for a reliable semi-auto shotgun than there used to be, so I would agree that is part of the answer.

The other part of the answer is a result of one of the great advantages of shotguns in general: their versatility. You can shoot anything from mild to wild out of them, birdshot, bucksht slugs, low brass, high brass, etc. The variety and range of loads available is greater than for a semi-auto pistol. And lots of semi-auto shotguns are reliable with some loads, and not with others, at least not without alteration. Many semi-sutos struggle to cycle reliably with light target loads.

One of the great advantages of a pump gun is that they can cycle all kinds of shells reliably, without any alterations. Another advantage is cost. Pumps are generally cheaper than semiautos, so if you are looking for high reliability at low cost, pumps look pretty good.

^^^^ this...cost is more of factor than anything else besides practice and muscle memory.

Auto loading shotguns are awesome for shoot and dump.

Consider that a Benelli can send eight rounds of 9 pellet 00 buck consisting of 72 30 cal pills downrange in about 2 seconds.

Only full auto can match that.

How well do you pump when prone? From behind cover without exposing your left elbow?

To OP, CQC with a full length shotgun? There are better choices.

              Good points there.

Prone shooting is bad juju for me with a pumper because of the movements required to cycle the damn thing. Semi auto makes that very easy.

I have seen far more malfunctions with pumps than semi-autos over the past 20 years. Particularly when shooting under pressure (training and competition). Under stress, pumps get short stroked regularly by people that swear they've never short stroked in their life - simply because they've never shot under pressure before. Pumps also lock up with double feeds and other malfunctions that are tough to clear. I can't tell you how many times it locks up and the shotgun is now down for a few minutes before it can be unlocked and cleared.

Semi autos are far easier and faster to clear a malfunction. But most don't malfunction once they're properly broken-in. There's a reason 3-gun pros use semi-autos exclusively. There's also a reason the military has transitioned to semi-autos. Semi-autos are very reliable and very fast.

This, however, is no longer the case. I'll also add that I have seen plenty of pump guns jam or get short stroked. I say choose whichever gun you wish just as long as you have proven it be reliable with whatever your preferred number of rounds happens to be. YMMV.
All guns malfunction. to think otherwise is very short sighted. The key to it is learning how to clear all the malfunctions quickly and efficiently. This is usually covered in your firearms training classes that I'm sure all of you have attended more than once.

If the answer is NOT? then you need to correct that!!! Also I can run a pump gun almost as fast as you can run your auto loader. And I can run my Auto Loader faster than you can run yours! Training is key! YMMV!

With semiauto shotguns I find inertia guns like the Benelli M1 to be extremely reliable and able to withstand lots of use with minimal maintenance. I have one with a 28” barrel set up for hunting and another with a 20” barrel and rifle sights for competition. After 30 years of use I have just as much confidence in a semiauto Benelli as I do in my 870s.

I have a Mossberg 930 SPX and Mossberg Thunder Ranch 12.
                            Both great Firearms.
                            I prefer the 930 SPX.

For many decades the pump shotguns were faster to shoot than any of the semi-autos.
Today there are semi-autos that are faster than the pumps.
