I think the reason he didnt get a good cheek weld was because there was no stock to weld to his cheek, jsut a pistol grip.

I'll admit I'm a little confused as well..

been shooting 12ga almost 40 years and I own about 20 various style 12ga shotguns today..

I remember the first time I shot my first 870 one handed, my buddy and I looked at each other and I went for it.. I was about 14yo and nothing bad happened

when I read the op, I envisioned what Buchanan replied to and was thinking the same thing..

pistol grip on a shoulder stock with a bad cheek weld and/or not firm in the shoulder pocket.. this commonly results in "cheek slap" with any high powered traditional stocked long gun..

traditional stocks have a more natural grip and lend well to shooting sports, hunting, etc. for more comfort during extended shooting sessions..

a pistol grip used properly actually does reduce felt recoil and improves control hence frequently found on combat style shotguns designed for heavy magnum loads in stressful situations..

anyone that's had any training or been through combat qualifications knows that a pistol grip can be less comfortable some times.. but when you have to shoot and scoot, the pistol grip can help maintain better control in some situations..

with regards to a pistol grip only, not sure how it would contact his face

I thought of the OP as using just a pistol grip. Not a pistol grip with the shoulder thingy like my bought for $189.00 on sale in March 2019 Stevens model 320 12 gauge pump shotgun. If it had a red dot on it and it hit him in the face, then he is doing something seriously wrong at a range with the church group out in the desert!

I was in a Big 5 years ago and a couple guys were buying 12 ga shotguns with pistol grips. These guys wanted to be “cool” LOL. I suggested they get 3” mag shells and they did

Yep. Cylinder choke and as much #9 shot makes it look easy on the skeet field. But I bet there were quite a few lucky BBs. Never the less it looks fun.

Now let's try the same on the sporting clays course. Or at my club longshot skeet. Or FITASC.

I took a shotgun class a few years back and the instructor told a story about when he was a kid competing in 3 gun. The night before the competition, he asked his dad to install a pistol grip on his shotgun. When he woke up the next morning, his dad had already left work and the shotgun still had a shoulder stock. So now he’s mad at his dad and leaves for the competition in a huff. Of course the guy shooting before him has a pistol grip. So the kid starts drooling over it and badmouthing his dad for being stupid and forgetting to install his grip last night. The guy offers to let the kid use his shotgun when he’s done. Kid is stoked. Well the guy starts shooting, the grip slips, and he breaks his nose. Guess dad wasn’t so stupid and forgetful after all.
