What was the AA12 made for?

Part of the reason for the invention of the AA-12 shotgun was from lessons learned from the Vietnam War (shouldn't be too surprising when the shotgun was originally designed in 1972).

In the jungles of Vietnam it was noted that shotguns were a popular weapon especially in the hands of the pointman of a formation because it could put alot of lead in the air at close range quickly. The limitation at that time was you only usually had 4-6 shells of 00 buckshot coming out as fast as you could rack the pump. The natural progression from that was "How can we get something that fires faster than a pump and holds more than a half dozen shells?"

Enter the AA-12 with an 8-round detachable box magazine or a harder to detach 20-round drum. Fire those shells at a sedate 200-300 shells a minute, and you are throwing a lot of buckshot downrange in a short period of time in a jungle environment. It also ended up showing later on that it could be useful in urban environments for similar reasons.

The South Korean Army Special Forces 707th Special Missions Group used the Daewoo USAS-12 during the 1990s, but during the 2000s, they replaced it with the Benelli M4.

In fact most world Militaries that adopted the Daewoo USAS-12 during the 1990s have discontinued/replaced it with more traditional shotguns due to real world usages not expectations. (looked better on paper/in theory, then actual usage). Which is why most world Militaries have passed on the MPS Inc AA-12, since the 3rd gen design is still not improved enough to warrant adoption over a traditional semi-auto or pump-action shotgun for prolonged usage in a combat environment.

AFAIK...
The MPS Inc AA-12 has never been used in combat operations by any type of Gov/Mil/LE.

The Daewoo USAS-12 was used in combat operations by Peruvian Special Forces in counter insurgency warfare /counter-terrorism operations against communist/socialist paramilitary/terrorist groups in Peru during the 1990s.

The Daewoo USAS-12 was used in combat operations by Brazilian Special Forces in counter insurgency warfare against anti-government forces in Brazil during the 1990s-2000s.

There are no reported usage in combat operations by South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, or UAE.

Not really, target guns are made for target shooting.

Of the trillions upon trillions of rounds fired from guns since the invention of gunpowder, I'd venture to say that far less than 1% ever penetrated flesh. Probably 99%+ was used to shoot targets.
