For skeet and 16 yard trap that is fine i shoot both with full and mod over under
try sporting clays. Trap the birds fly away from you skeet is mixture outgoing.incoming and passing shots 8 stations. Go to range and watch and shoot a round of each. Cannot use hd barrel on ranges 23" barrel min length most clubs. Where do you live. Here in socal we have several ranges.

You could use a Mossy 500. I started with a Remington 870. Doubles with a pump are more challenging. If you're just starting, and shooting for fun, you can throw singles on trap or skeet till you get the feel for it.

A 28" barrel with screw in chokes would be a good starting point, with a Skeet and a Modified choke to start.

If you get serious about it, you'll probably upgrade to a semi-auto or and over under. I like both better than shooting a pump now.

There's a bunch of really knowledgeable folks here that can give you a ton of great info.

Shot a lot of clays with my old mod choked pump before I started collecting semi-autos. Have fun.

Richmond you have to use lead free and bio wads. Better to go to usi in Concord. I think it's ok to use a short defense battle on the trap field. I've seen a few folks shooting shorties.
My buddy used to shoot his ak12 until he got hooked and started buying over unders.
Concord gun club is 20 bucks a year and has skeet shoots before club meetings. That's how they got me hooked on skeet.[emoji28] Free ammo and lessons!

That’s a good choice- I have one as well and it’s lasted me at least 10 years now- both in trap/skeet, and out in the field hunting. Get some home defense rounds for at home and you’re set.

Nothing wrong with starting out with the M 500. The Mod choked barrel will be fine for 16yd Trap. However, it a bit tight for starting out in Skeet, the targets are close. A CYl or SKT choke is a much better option for Skeet.
I've used my 870 with a MOD choked barrel for both, Skeet is a challenge with it.
If you get hooked on shooting clays, a new gun or 3 or 4...will soon follow. These days, I shoot mainly Sporting Clays with O/U's, the 870 is now a safe Queen.

                          ><

Take a drive to Diablo R&d Club in Concord.....you can be a member for <$30.00 a year. Easier on the pocket book as far as ammo and price per game (round)

Call and confirm that your shotgun's configuration is allowed for clays.

Show up and let people know that you are new and want to learn and any help is welcomed. They have Skeet, Trap and 5 Stand

                          Have fun

For trap shooting, the modified choke on your 28" barrel will work just fine so don't worry about it.

The barrel you have right now is most likely one that has a fixed modified choke on it so you won't be able to change it unless you send it in to custom shop, which is expensive and not worth it.

Barrels that accept removable chokes will come with threads in the inner walls at the end of the barrel. Sellers of these barrels will usually tell you what kind of removable chokes it supports.

But like I said, if you're trap shooting, just use your 28" barrel with modified choke. I used a modified choke on my Benelli Supersport for many many years shooting trap and never had to switch it out. In fact, I've found removable chokes for trapshooting to be such a hassle that when I custom ordered my shotgun, I had fixed chokes on BOTH the barrels (unsingle and O/U barrels).
