Eventually he'll try a shootin buddy's shotgun and educate himself on what works better than what he's using now. Based on his experience he can supply you with a list of choices. Then you dig as deep as you're willing to go.

Good luck to both of you.

He should consider a Fabarms semiauto also.

Browning or Beretta. Be careful, over and under shotguns are a pretty deep rabbit hole. I've seen them get really expensive.

While I hear mostly good about SA-08's, few autos can hold up to the rigors of competition shooting. Econo versions generally have shorter lifespans than bigger brand more expensive models. Most eventually break and at minimum need a backup for when they do.

He's in an environment to try other guns. Use it.

He ran his Coach’s Citori CXT today and it shot really well for him. Also sent a few rounds up out of a teammates Beretta 682 (I told him you guys recommended he try it), but he preferred the CXT. Its close enough to what I told him he could spend….. plus not seeing many used 682’s for under 2600 or so, and the logistics of trying to buy a private party gun for him out in the boonies would be a bit of a headache. Gunbroker has the Citori available to ship, his coach set him up with the FFL that’s close to the school and helps the team out with transfers (and sells them an assload of ammo).

I’ll let you guys know how he shoots the new gun at the next match. Thank you all for the advice…. This is a great resource.

Mine needed firing pins and springs after 20,000 rounds, and hinge pins after 30,000.

The CX series is an excellent value IMO. If he's been shooting the field guns well, a I'd try a CX or CXS before making a decision. They'll shoot "flatter", more like his field guns and be more conducive to multiple shooting disciplines.

I've always felt the 12g Citori was a bit "blocky", but less an issue for a target gun.

That said, I think you could find a nice 682 by Christmas. Gunbroker always has some.

That seems rather soon. Springs and pins can be replaced by most anyone, including yourself.

Though I have read two things:

                      1) Browning seems to have rather deep counterbores for the shell rim. Hulls with thin bases can seat a little deep.

                      2) Pierced primer (Cheddite seems to be the most prone), can erode the firing pin.

Both situations seem to affect the bottom barrel more than the top.

They also have a weird issue with their ejector, which is not very secure and not staked, it can become loose after a while. My wife shoots a Browning Citori and after only a few rounds, the ejector and the screw flew off, thank god we were shooting at Sunnyvale with fellow club members. Everyone pitched in to search for that little rod and the tiny screw used to secure it. To our amazement we managed to find both and I had to reattach it back, this time using loctite to lock it down.

Was the problem on a CX model or a 725? Also, the folks over at Sunnyvale are some of the nicest people you can find at a range.

Only a few hours left, but unless the price goes way ($1225 now) up toward closing, this could be a good deal and worth some "maintenance" at Coles. Doesn't look worn, just dirty and some scars in the wood. Already set up for a tall guy. New pad in order.
