High quality semi auto shotgun that has only a pistol grip?

I would like to buy a high quality (Beretta, Benelli, Browning, Remington, etc.) semi auto shotgun that has just a pistol grip (no shoulder stock) and an 18-20 inch barrel.

Think of a Mossberg Cruiser type shotgun, but semi auto.

Everything I am finding seems to have the recoil mechanism in the buttstock, like the Beretta 1301, Benelli M2, etc.

The Remington Versa Max TAC14 would work, but I need an 18 inch barrel (and 26 inches OAL) to be California legal, and the Versa Max is not currently being made by the new RemArms.

I was thinking I could build this using an old Browning A5 or a Remington 11-87, but I would prefer a newer, lighter, more modern design.

Am I overlooking a suitable candidate?

Seriously doubt you will find one. While there are some models that have the recoil spring installed either inside the action or on the mag tube I haven't seen a pistol grip with no shoulder stock made for a semi auto. And of course other semi-autos have the recoil spring installed inside the stock.

EDIT: And any inertia shotgun you want needs a shoulder stock so it can use the stability to cycle a new round.

There could be a reason why you don't see many.
Inertia type guns don't work very well when the stock is not tight against your shoulder.
A gas gun would work, but besides the gun shown in the above video, I haven't seen one.

PS: Visit the web site for the gun in the above video, it says it has a 14" barrel.

Bonnie and Clyde's "whip it" design. Remington 11 or Browning A5.

Black Aces DOES have a semi auto available with an 18.5 inch barrel that comes with both a shoulder stock and a raptor style grip.

Thank you for the info. Black Aces shotguns seem to be made in Turkey and have poor reviews. Hopefully the RemArms Versamax will be made again soon.

A pistol grip shotgun has a geewiz factor, but I've seen wayyyyyy too many people get punched in the kisser firing it while sighting down the barrel. Some have even lost or ended chipping front teeth. For hip shooting it's fun. but for anything else it's a waste of duckets.

I don't know why you think this is a good idea. Shooting a gun like this in any thing other that a very CQB situation is pointless, and not very accurate.

Maybe if you took a Tactical Shotgun Class and learned how to use a gun like this you'd understand why Shotguns with pistol grips are inferior to conventional stocks.

Maybe I have taking such classes and have a very specific role for this shotgun.

Still looking for options, may try and track down a used Versamax and chop the barrel but then I lose the choke tubes. A TAC18 would be perfect for California, since a TAC13 won’t fly here.

This will be for self defense in a very close range environment, with a handgun as secondary, which is as specific as I care to get.

The current shotgun is an 870 Police model, which I have found is very awkward to store and deploy.

I could use an 870 or Mossberg 500 with pistol grip, but the semi-auto has some advantages that make it worth seeking out. The folding Rem 870 is the best of both worlds, but won’t fit in the space I have available due to thickness with stock folded and is not semiauto.

One nice thing about a pistol grip shotgun with an 18 inch barrel is that I have the option of installing a shoulder stock and not violating any laws.

Here is a good discussion of this type of short shotgun- I may just settle for another 870, maybe in 20 gauge.

At very close range how many shots do you really need? I’d take reliability over speed for HD. Just rock the pump.

piston guns, like the m4, jm940 and 1301 would work, and should cycle one handed or if you were disabled or injured.
