If you live in an apartment, condo, or townhome, #4 buck is probably your best bet.

If you live in a normal single family neighborhood, you could consider using #1 buck.

If you live on acreage, you could use 00 buck.

But you better know what's on the other side of all your walls before you pull the trigger, because you'll hit it.

Inside most homes, your longest shot will be around 10 to 15 yards. There's not much spread at 10 yards, so you better aim just like you were using a rifle.

If you choose to use a 12 ga shotgun inside the home/apartment for self defense, I would recommend #4 heavy bird. The only buckshot I own is Federal low recoil tactical buckshot. I have a few boxes of slugs but would never consider them for a emergency home defense situation. I prefer a handgun for interior home defense and an M1 carbine for parameter defense but hey, I like to keep it simple.

On another discussion I asked a specific question about 4 buck, and you started talking about training, which wasn't what I asked you about.

Because I don't go into detail about the training I've had or still need, or plan to have, or haven't had, or respond to any of your suggestions about training to your satisfaction, that doesn't mean I'm resisting what you said.

I haven't seen any resistance by me or anyone else in these discussions regarding your recommendations/suggestions.

As far as my Dad teaching me how to shoot, it wasn't 30 or 40 yrs. ago, it was 62 yrs. ago, I'm 72 yrs. old, a yr older than you, and I knew/know what I need/don't need, and that was before I discussed anything w/you.

Yes, my Dad was an LEO, fought in battle as a War Vet, was actually in some gun battles as an LEO, and over the yrs. he trained folks in his dept/trained me, which was why it wasn't just me that listened to him, but numbers of grown men he trained/mentored who went on to thank him for what he did for them.

Most folks as well as me aren't going to write a diary/run down their lifes experiences when they appear on a venue like this and ask a question. I'm always learning, I'll never stop learning, but because I don't talk about it w/you, doesn't mean me or anybody else is resisting training.

My question to you would be,,," Have you learned what size shot you should be using in your HD gun yet?" You've only got about 40 opinions on what to use. But I'd bet your Dad only used 00 and Slugs,,, so why ask? I figure he taught you? It's not like this is a new topic since these have been the tried and true choices for about 100 years.

I'm sure your Dad was a Wonderful Man. So was mine. You're a year older than me so you can't be all bad either, and neither am I. So lets be friends.

Opinions are what forums are for; the ammo I use, I'll use for a good reason, that I do know. My discussing ammo here isn't profering 40 opinions on what ammo to use, but I have tried to share what I know about the ammo I do have, and ask questions about the ammo I don't have, for the reasons I've stated, and as someone in this discussion said, they got some insight/benefit from the info shared by the input from everybody in this discussion, and when that happens it was a discussion worth having.
