    .410 For Home Defense?

Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.

Tis better to have Trolled & lost, Than to never have Trolled, at all.

If its between using a .410 or using harsh words, I'd go with the .410. At the minimum, it will hurt like hell.

Federal has a slug that's 109 grains at 1750 fps or so.

Seems to me that's close in weight to some 9mm and faster. I can't see how it would be inadequate unless you specifically need barrier blind ammo.

Heck, Winchester loads 5 pellets of 000 buck at 1150 fps. That's 5 .36 caliber lead round balls impacting simultaneously.

If you have a painful shoulder that can't take impact you're looking at the wrong tool for the job.

Look at the current crop of PC carbines and match the caliber with what you already have in inventory. Something in a 9mm or ?? What recoil?

Compatible mags is an obvious plus. HD/HP ammo does better out of a longer tube.

              Semi auto .20g

While .410 isn't bad neither is a .20g and it has more hit/pain potential with #3 buck imho. I own one just for the fact that everyone in the family(wife , 14 & 16 yr old) can run it well.

Again .410 isn't bad but you could do better even if recoil is a factor. Also a PC Carbine would work if your inclined.

Cheese: Yes they do have them, and they are 1775 fps and 1/4 oz is 109 gr, but that velocity is up with .357 mag from a rifle.

Look: Any gun will do if you will do.

Sometimes you have to run what you brung, and if all you can handle is a .410 shotgun then so be it. It's better than a stick.

Might want to practice a bunch with it so at least you can get he most out of it?

I'd rather have a .410 Long Gun than a Taurus Judge and yet everybody Raves about how effective the Judge is for SD.

I’m confident in some of the .410 loads to provide sufficient “deterrent” in a worst case scenario. The Brenneke style slugs are nice in my experience, also the Foster type are reliable. I have shot plenty of the ‘000’ buck loads (4 or 5 pellet) to know they would hit a person at in home distances plenty hard. Chances are a face full of #4 or #6 shot would dissuade someone, but the .410 needs as much thump as it can get.
Never tried those Winchester loads with the discs or the slug/disc combo.

Inside 10 yards any shotgun is plenty. The shot hasn't had time to expand yet, leading to much better performance. Get what you like, feel comfortable.

For someone with a more delicate shoulder, I would suggest a .357 Magnum levergun (16") and fire .38 Special +P out of it. The felt recoil is relatively soft, they're easy to aim, and they're most definitely CA legal. The wife loves shooting .38 Special out of ours, and she's a bit recoil-sensitive.

Even full-house .357 Magnum isn't terrible in, say, a Rossi 92, Winchester, Marlin, or Henry Big Boy. The wife prefers .38 Special, but she can handle .357M out of it if need be.

                              Henry makes a .410 levergun.
