    12gauge coach gun

Hello had a quick question as I'm a novice when it comes to shotguns. I have a stoeger coach gun 12 gauge. When I recently picked up my glock 17 they had 12 gauge 00 and slugs in stock so i picked up some. I told the guy to throw two boxes in with my glock. When i got home and opened the bag i noticed the slugs were 12gauge 2.5" slugs i know my coach gun will chamber 3" and 2.75" but I'm not sure beyond that. Will i have an issue with 2.5" slugs? I cannot return/exchange the ammo so I'm stuck with it either way but dont want to blow myself up...

Can a 12gauge coach gun chamber and fire 2.5" slugs? I got lost googling it... started talking about one barrel being modified and one barrel being improved... decided just to ask CGN to be educated in 12gauge chambering

    Thanks

My apologies, but I am not familiar with the stoeger coach gun chokes. I would be surprised if the chokes were anything more than an improved cylinder. Are the barrels marked with the chokes? (Cyl., Improved Cylinder, (I.C.) Mod., Full, etc.)
Generally speaking you can shoot slug out of a cylinder or improved cylinder chokes; but I would be hesitant to shoot slugs out of a barrel with anything tighter than an "improved cylinder" choke.

Regarding the 2.5" slugs, i have never heard of a 2.5" shotgun shell within the past 20 years. Older shotguns can have 2.5" chambers, but they were back in the 1900's IIRC. Who manufactured the shotgun slug shells and how is the box marked?

    Best regards,
    870classic.

Josh, does your gun have changeable chokes?

You should be fine with those 2.5" shells. Federal is making 1.75" shells and Aguila has had mini shells out for years. They run best in break action guns like your coach gun.

I love shotguns. I always have and I come from a family who used shotguns for hunting deer, shooting birds, and defending the homestead. In the Marines, I was one of the few Marines issued a Mossberg because I could not only use, but teach the shotgun. To me, shotguns are constant experiments in ammunition, ... Read more

I would be more interested in the choke than the shell length. Look at each of your barrels - the choke should be marked on each one. It may say CYL or IC or IM or MOD or FULL etc. The barrels may not be the same choke. Unless of course you have screw in chokes like my Russian 12ga hammer coach.

You can fire slugs through any choke but improved cylinder usually gives the best results.

Sounds like you bought some mini shells , they work in single shot shotguns so probably should work in a double. Just taking a swing here.

I had never heard of 2.5" slugs or shells either, I seen those aguila mini shells but never anything 2" or 2.5" didn't even think to check what the guy was giving me.

My shotgun is at my parents house in a safe I have there. I live in an apartment and dont feel comfortable leaving a safe in the apartment for long guns. I'll go grab it from my parents house later today and check out the choke on the barrels.

It does NOT have screw in chokes. And I believe one barrel has a different choke than the other but will look and see what they are stamped I'll post pics of the barrel markings if I cant figure it out lol.

That is not even a rifled slug, I have no idea WTF that is

WTH is that store even doing stocking that euro junk - has it gotten that bad??

It looks like those are probably meant for a slug (rifled) barrel but it may be for some type of specialty barrel, never seen one like that.

I didn't even ask what brand or anything so it's on me not them I just know everywhere I've gone when I've gone has been out of 00 and slugs I have plenty of remington 00 just wanted a few slugs.

But yea normally I wouldn't be asking I'd just throw it in and shoot it but when I took it out and compared it to my remington 2 3/4 theres a difference so got me confused

It does say for use in barrels with any choke
SAGA Bolido shotgun slug. Shotgun slug with top penetration, power and precision. 12 gauge shotgun slugs.

I just don't see how that is going to stabilize out of a smooth bore barrel but who knows, maybe there is some other trick to it.

Bolido is the slug with the greatest penetration power and accuracy. Perfect for using in heavy shotguns. Recommended its use for hunting with dogs for any type of game, especially those with thick skin and big weight, when there is good visibility (mountains or flat areas with little vegetation) and in barrels with any choke. The Bolido is suitable if the hunter has a clear view of the game and has time to shoot.
So rated at 1400fps.... out of something. The fact that they mention 'any choke' would seem to indicate a smooth bore because slug barrels usually do not have a choke IIRC.

Also it looks like the pic on the box does not depict the entire projectile. Here is another pic I found

Also it looks like the pic on the box you have does not depict the entire projectile. Here is another pic I found. It is blurry, can't tell but the big sabot wad also looks more like a round for a rifled barrel not a smooth bore. The pic is too blurry to see if the wad is rifled.

Nice info. I didn't catch that when I went on their website I think I got lost when they said it was especially good for hunting with dogs... then I started googling what caliber hunting dogs like best.

Looks like I should be fine especially since it's a break action shotgun.

They appear active on Facebook, you might ask them what it is supposed to be used in (smooth bore or rifled barrel)
It's a good time to remember the Bolido. It's the slug with the greatest penetration power and accuracy. Perfect for using in heavy shotguns. Recommended its use for hunting with dogs for any type...

If anyone can read Spanish this may have something. They do have one slug that is clearly rifled.

The bullet itself has an octagon shape up until the round shoulder then there is that plastic wad? Seated inside.
