3-4k is a good start, but you are going to need way more than that...

from what I've been able to come up with speaking to a bunch of reloaders at my club and including our discount - you don't save anything when it comes to basic target loads, where reloading really has a benefit is loading premium shells with higher end components or to mitigate recoil

I cannot find the same type of load from any store without spending a lot of money then what I reload, I am a firm believer in consistency! I reload 1oz but at a higher fps then most store bought loads, So wallyworld or other cheap ammo does not cut it for me! So even if it's the same price or a little cheaper it works for me.

I do it for 3 reasons, 1) It does save some money; Reloads $5.00 a box, factory shells $7.00+. 2) It saves me time; For me to buy shells it would be a minimum of 1 hour of time (if they have what I want), I can load 400 in an hour. 3) I don't have to worry about finding a store that has shells in stock, I have about 1.5 years worth of the necessary components on hand.

The $$$ is small, the time is small, whether you can find what you want or not is huge. Add up these things and reloading is worth it to me...YMMV

If you are planning on shooting very much at all you must relaod.
The only Factory Loaded ammo you can't really compete with are Walmart Federal or Winchester Target loads which were selling at $21.74/100 that's .22 a round.

However the Walmart in Ventura stopped selling all ammunition this summer and I don't know if they plan to bring it back.

I have several 12 ga Reloading Machines. On my Pacific DL266 Single Stage Press I can load 25 rounds in 15 minutes easy. On my Pacific DL366 I can Load 100 rounds in 15 minutes.

I just sold a Dillon SL900 that can easily load 600 rounds an hour, and the guy who bought it loaded 2000 rounds the first weekend he owned it.

It all depends on how much time you want to spend reloading shells.

If you plan on shooting 28's or .410's $12.50 a box will get old pretty fast, and the cost of components for those shells is about 1/2 of 12 ga so the cost per round goes down even more.

You can buy "Once Fired AA hulls" on www.trapshooters.com for about .03-.05 cents each. I bought 2500 once for .04 each or $100. I have AA hulls I have loaded 8 times and they are still viable. Once they split they are done but at .04 each that is not a big deal.

The other side of this is actually liking to do the work. If you don't then forget it. If you do, then loading shells for your next shoot becomes an enjoyable past time.

You'll have to figure out the rest of it for yourself.

I'm shooting the cheap federal stuff at 28c per round from bass pro. Normal day out is 4-6 boxes, about 3- 5 times a month. Reloading definitely makes sense, but not nearly as much as reloading 357, 30-06, or 45-70 (other rounds I happen to be set up for). If I cut it down to 20c a round, that's maybe $500 saved over the course of a year. Or pay ~9 months and shoot 3 months for "free".

Now that savings could be more, since I could reload bismuth for small game, and steel probably for waterfowl. Low round count comparatively but much higher savings per round. And I could have exactly what I want.

Still it's relatively small dollars compared to the other reloading I do. As long as I plan ahead and keep up my store of a couple thousand rounds I'm not too worried about it. 12g is by far the most available ammo in a historic shortage, even if we go 6 months with no ammo at all I can still shoot a bit every week. That's good enough for me. For the guy shooting trap 3x a week competitively, he might have an answer different than me.

Reloading while right now may take some time to build up a hoard once you do it will save you money in the long term as well as you will be able to shoot at times when other may not be able to shoot.

I have so many supplies and ammo that I reloaded I could shoot as much as i want for a year or 2 without buying ammo!!
