choke tube grease

Waterfowl hunter here, I use Lucas Oil Red n Tacky #2. It's the only thing that always works in even the wettest of environments.

Carlsons/ Birchwood Casey because it is what is in the case and has been for years and years. Though any grease would be ok with me such as mentioned by others above.

By the way, to avoid stuck chokes, periodically remove, clean, apply a thin relube coat. And do so every time the gun gets wet from rain etc.


We had some hunters that hadn't removed their chokes in more than 10 years. So we try to make it an annual choke removal, grease, and reinstall on the first day of hunting.

I've just used Rem-Oil. A tiny drop does the job. Worked well on the 1100 for clays, and on the 870 for clays and ducks. I did have one get sticky on Mossy 835, but that was my fault; I was not fastidious as usual cleaning it after a particularly wet duck hunt hunt.

Just looked; the Rem1100 manual says to remove, clean and reinsert chokes with a drop of Rem-Oil.

I use a full synthetic motor oil also, but, Vaseline, well, hadn't thought of that. Guessing it would work just fine.

This was recommended to me after my Citori Sporting Clays Edition .410 seized up on a hot day.

After $250 at Pacific Sales to get the hinge refitted, I was told by my Shotgun Guru to use Vaseline on it. No problems since on any of my O/U's

I now have little travel tubes of Vaseline in all my Shotgun cases along with a small bottle of "Amsoil 20-50 Racing Oil!"

I use the "Racing Oil" for moving parts on all my Autos and Pumps, Glocks, Revolvers, Air Rifles, milling machines, lathes, and the big hot tip is in my Air Compressor!

It coats the inside of the tank and prevents rusting out form the inside, and it works immediately.

I have been using it in my Machines and Compressors for 30+ years, it is the best way oil I've ever used. Stays on the job better than anything else. Started using it on my guns when I found out JMB recommended 30 wt motor oil for his A5's. This is just one step farther than 30 wt and it's synthetic so it doesn't burn.

1 Qt. will last most for a lifetime. I'm on my Second bottle cuz I use it in my shop.

I'm NOT an Amsoil Dealer! But I do use their filters and oils in my Jeep!

I hunt ducks almost exclusively over saltwater.

I used to just squirt Ballistol on the threads. Then I started using WD-40 Specialist Long-Term Corrosion Inhibitor. I'm not sure how you can define "better" when the Ballistol was working flawlessly, but obviously the WD-40 must be "better" since it's a "Long-Term Corrosion Inhibitor".

Either way, no problems in rainy, salty, bird crap covered duck blinds.

I had a Comp-n-Choke seize up in a barrel once. Nothing I tried would loosen it, short of damaging the barrel or choke. I called Comp-n-Choke for advice and the guy said to stand the choke-end of the barrel in a jar, pour in Kroil so that the oil covered the entire tube inside the barrel and then wait 5 days. 5 days?....yep, 5 days.
Day 1 - choke was tight as a drum, back in the Kroil
Day 2 - bearing down with a cloth-covered vice-grip...nothing
Day 3 - the choke tube just laughed at me
Day 4 - Beginning to think that Mr. Comp-n-Choke-Rep was laughing at me
Day 5 - Choke tube unscrewed, by hand, like it was never tight at all.
If I hadn't witnessed it myself, I would not believe it.

Interesting solution (no pun intended) to solve the problem. Sure beats shortening the barrel.
