Rem 870 Tactical mag-fed

A friend asked me about the mag-fed Remington on sale at Turner's, the 860 Tactical Express. On sale for $289.96.

Any experience? Good deal, good gun? I am aware that the 870's were and may still be prone to rust.

How is the tube-fed more versatile? Buddy of mine is asking the same thing; I don't know enough to let him know what's up.

tube advantages:
- no big magazine sticking out the bottom and getting in the way
- integrated magazine means that you have to try really hard to lose/misplace the magazine
- easy to top off tube as you go
- can single load through port

mag advantages
- if you need the shotgun to be obviously unloaded but quick back into action ( travel gun? more kid safe?)
- much faster way of loading 6+ rounds in one go ( is it really? )
- keeps weight off of the gun ( no side saddle/butt cuff for extra rounds, mags kept on body )
- moves mass towards the center of the gun. ( swing faster? )

What am I missing?

I think it would be nice in a field gun. Finish your hunt; just drop the magazine. No working shells thru the action to unload.

But how are you going to block the mag? You can't have 6 shells in the mag, or the capacity to accept more than two shells in the mag. You are only allowed to have two shells in the mag/tube plus one in the chamber.

So why go to the trouble of getting a mag fed shotgun for hunting, when you would just have to put a block in it so it can only accept two shells? Better off stick with a tube fed shotgun.

The exception would be non game animals, but most people don't use shotguns much for those.

Mossberg had box fed shotguns(195 series) going back decades ago. Granted that's a bolt action. The one my dad got in the 1950's only held two in the mag.

It would be easy enough to have short 2 round mags on the new shotguns.

It would be nice to be able to just drop a mag and empty the chamber before getting out of the duck blind, or purring the shotgun in the truck. Just like all the box mag rifles out now.

Useless. California is mag capacity of 2 + 1 in the chamber. Here is the reg in case you were wondering:

a) Shotguns 10 gauge or smaller using shot shells only and incapable of holding more than three shells in the magazine and chamber combined. If a plug is used to reduce the capacity of a magazine to fulfill the requirements of this section, the plug must be of one piece construction incapable of removal without disassembling the gun.

Gotta get somebody to make 2 round mags first. I don't want to fool with trying to block one. I might as well just stick with my tube fed shotgun.

Reviews state the mag feed tests indicate its less jam prone than a regualr pump with an elevator. No doubt its less moving parts and less prone to breakage and malfunction.
